‘Wind Traces,’ ‘Guns,’ ‘Intimate Julia’ Win Guadalajara Co-production Meeting

13 March 2015 3:04 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Jimena Montemayor’s “Wind Traces,” Nathalia Isabel Orozco’s “When the Guns Go Silent” and “Intimate Julia,” from Karina Minujin, were among six winners at the Guadalajara Festival’s 11th Co-production Meeting, one of its most important industry events.

Notably, of the six feature film projects, five were directed or co-helmed by women, a sign of how they are beginning to play a somewhat more significant role – outside Argentina, already notable for its notable distaff directors – in Latin American countries’ national cinemas.

Of the victors, four will be first-time feature directors, if their films lift off. Three winning directors have studied or live abroad, another sign of Latin America’s newest cinema’s globalization. Many of the projects register or analyze the impact of sweeping historical change on individuals in a continent where, economic growth notwithstanding, people rarely feel masters of their fate.

Berlin: Memento Films Intl. Rolls Out Sales on ‘The Propaganda Game’ (Exclusive)

12 February 2015 5:57 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Berlin – Sold by Paris-based Memento Films Intl., Alvaro Longoria’s “The Propaganda Game” has closed a clutch of major markets, joining the select numbers of movies which, though not major independent Hollywood fare with a A-list star attached, have still broken out to sales at this week’s Berlinale European Film Market.

Given the “huge shift on arthouse/indie movies, to sell finished movies, not pre-sell,” as Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz observed at this year’s Berlin Festival, that is a notable achievement for a film still in post, and a docu-feature at that.

Kick-starting a first round of pre-sales, “The Propaganda Game” has closed Germany (Polyband), the U.K. (Metrodome) and Australia (eOne), as well as Switzerland (Praesens Film), Taiwan (Encore Film), ex-Yugoslavia (McF Megacom) and Bulgaria (Bnt). Spanish theatrical distribution and TV sales are under negotiation, Longoria said.

Berlin: Memento Films Intl. Boards Alvaro Longoria’s ‘The Propaganda Game’ (Exclusive)

In a relatively rare documentary pick-up, Paris-based Memento Films Intl. – better known for handling edgier U.S indie fare and fare such as Palme d’Or winner “Winter Sleep” – has acquired world sales rights to Alvaro Longoria’s “The Propaganda Game.”

A vision of North Korea shot largely in North Korea and portraying the country as a battleground for a propaganda war between its ruling regime and a hostile West, “Game” is being brought onto the market by Mfi at Berlin’s European Film Market.

“The Propaganda Game” marks the second directorial outing for Longoria, helmer of the Javier Bardem-produced “Sons of the Clouds: The Last Colony” and producer of the Oliver Stone-directed “Comandante” and “Looking for Fidel,” a Fidel Castro docu diptych.
