The literal translation of the title of this movie is: Chinese mother.
This movie is rather anti-social in comparison to other Chinese movies about Chinese females made during the same era. When the topic is about Chinese females, other Chinese films of its time usually concentrated on the topics of personal liberalization, challenged and criticized about the traditional rigid Confucian teachings that discriminates against women. This movie, however, is going against this general trend of the Chinese movies about females in the reform era in that it eulogizes the traditional type of Chinese women that sacrifice their own potential happiness and opportunities in helping their children and others.
