Trivia

Thomas McCarthy wrote the three main roles directly for the actors who ended up playing them. McCarthy has stated in interviews that at the time of writing he was friends with Peter Dinklage, an acquaintance and a colleague of Bobby Cannavale and almost a complete stranger to Patricia Clarkson.
Peter Dinklage is a vegetarian; the beef jerky he eats in the film was actually made of tofu.
Such were the budgetary constraints on this 20-day shoot, Patricia Clarkson's modified trailer - a windowless contraption - had originally been used for transporting horses.
All the artwork seen in Olivia Harris' house was painted and provided by actress Jessalyn Gilsig, writer/director Thomas McCarthy's friend and co-star during their run in TV show Boston Public (2000).
In the hospital waiting room near the end of the film, Joe can be seen reading Robert Evans' autobiography 'The Kid Stays in the Picture'.

Perhaps it is not coincidental Finbar McBride's namesake or patron is St. Finbar (550-620), who lived as a religious hermit. Despite choosing a remote place to found a monastery, Finbar attracted many, even as many as to eventually increase into the city of Cork. The similarities are striking between the character and the bishop.
