This movie has made an accurate prediction of what was coming:
The rapid Chinese economic development started in 1980 caused the resurgence of traditional Chinese culture, namely, the traditional Confucian teaching, and sadly, such resurgence was blind in that there was no distinction between the virtue and the dross in the traditional culture. Vengeance for what happened decades ago is one of the example of the dross in the traditional Confucian teaching and it came back with the rising economic wealth in the reform.
The movie accurately points this out via its plot and in this sense, it is both an accurate prediction, as well as a piece of great work of cultural introspection.
