The literal translation of the title is: Cai Yue and her sweetheart
In the 1990's, there is a resurgence of traditionalism accompanying the increased wealth, thanks to the reforms. However, the resurgence of traditionalism was blind, and the dross of traditionalism also came back. This film criticize the dross of Confucianism, namely, the discrimination of women, and its prohibition of seeking personal freedom in love and romance: according to Confucius, a windowed woman should remain unmarried till her death to show her loyalty to her husband. Chinese need to discard dross like this and inherit the virtual only.
