Sunil Shetty's downfall in the late 90s
23 March 2011 | by (Hong Kong) – See all my reviews

Sunil Shetty is a good actor and is an action hero just like Akshay Kumar. However, just like Akshay, Sunil too has given a lot of crap films in his career particularly after the 90s. But, in the 90s he too had a lot of craps. 1997 was Akshay Kumar's worst year but for Sunil it was an average year. This year was promising as Sunil got tremendous acclaim with the blockbuster Border and a super hit with the typical but good action film Bhai. He also gave an average hit Prithvi which was an okay movie as it didn't make sense in certain parts. Sadly, in the same year Shetty had craps like Dhaal and Judge Mujrim his first 2 releases in 1997. Dhaal was bad but at least it had a decent story. However, the handling was 80s style and the dialogs and overacting was simply irritating. Therefore, the film was a crap. Judge Mujrim is another Shetty starer again with a veteran actor. In Dhaal the veteran was Vinod Khana while here it is Jeetandra. Sadly, even Jeetandra couldn't save this film from flopping at the box office.

Judge Mujrim is about an judge(acted by Jeetandra) who is known for sentencing several criminals. He never changes his sentence even if the person was his own family member. One day, on his way to work, he see's a man brutally stab an innocent civilian and he reports this to the police. The police officer(acted by Ashwini Bhave) is his sister and agrees to take action. After further information and a sketch, it is found that the convict is Sunil(Sunil Shetty). The inspector is shocked as this is none other than her old lover. Well anyways, Sunil is found, arrested, and given a sentence of around 7 years. Sunil tries to escape numerous times but fails. One day he gets into a fight and both of them are injured. The other guy who fought with Sunil is Mukesh Khanna. In the hospital Sunil hears a news and goes insane but is arrested again. But when the judge learns that it was not Sunil who committed the murder, but his lookalike Daaaga, he is shocked. Together, both of them escape and run from the law and find the real killers. However, Daaga is dead and now they have to start their search all over again. The other guy who fought with Sunil in prison also joins and the team of three find and kill all the villains in the end. PS: The villain is played by Kiran Kumar.

The movie is not a thriller as the identity of the villain is revealed from the start portions of the movie as the Judge knows who it is. The script is absolutely crap. The story as usual is typical and cringe worthy. What's equally horrible is that the handling of the film is even more cringe worthy. The dialogs are the same 80s film dialogs and the way the movie progresses makes each scene that will happen later predictable. The love story of Ashwini Bhave and Sunil Shetty is clichéd and having one song as a flashback with them dancing doesn't explain anything about their romance. The sudden escape of Sunil and Judge is extremely clichéd, how can you just disappear from a van like that? Some of the scenes are so stupid the movie gets on your nerves and tests your patience. The villains get the same lame dialogs and their henchmen before fighting make that same expression before getting beaten by the heroes.

Performances are quite average. Sunil Shetty overacts and this movie was actually started in 1995 and took 2 years to make. The movie was from the period where all Shetty films were flopping and his acting was quite cringe worthy and annoying during the time. He shouts and cries in pain during that hospital scene which gave me a headache. Jeetandra is probably the only actor who does somewhat decent. His role is of a serious and honest judge and he does quite well. Ashwini Bhave has almost no role and she is no actress material. She only did good in a few films with Akshay Kumar in her earlier days. Mukesh Khanna is a legendary actor but he irritates with his awful overacting when his subplot is introduced. It is unintentionally hilarious watching him cut some guys hand off in a fight scene. His expressions are horrible too. The rest provide average support while most of the side actors are actually quite garbage while a few do a good job.

Direction by Jagdish A Sharma is awful as I don't think he even did his job properly here. This dude is known for making the average hit film Sapoot which was an okay movie but much better than this crap. He didn't even do good as the director here. Music is crap, typical 90s songs and at least some 90s films had good music. This one has all lame crass songs so I completely forgot them. Nothing memorable about any other technical aspects so forget it.

On the whole, Judge Mujrim is another one of those delayed and extremely clichéd films where even a few good performances couldn't save the day for the losses the distributors and producers had to cover.
