Should the Rock be the Lynchpin of Universal’s Horror Universe?

26 June 2016 5:03 PM, PDT | Cinelinx | See recent Cinelinx news »

Universal Studios is trying to bring a lot of star power to its planned Shared Monster-verse. The latest rumor is that Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson will sign with Universal to play the Wolf Man in multiple films. Will the Rock’s star power help make the Universal Monsters Shared Continuity a success?

Universal Studios is a little late getting on-board the shared Universe train (which is ironic since they actually created the first shared Universe in 1943 when Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man came out) and they’re trying to stack the deck with big stars to help their shared monster-verse have the same success that Disney is having with Marvel films. So far, they’ve nailed down Tom Cruise for a Mummy remake (due out June 2017) and Johnny Depp for a new Invisible Man film (due April 2018). Russell Crowe is appearing as Dr. Jekyll in The Mummy which will probably lead to a Dr. »

The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing II Will Continue The Vampire Hunter’s Quest On The Xbox One Next Month

24 June 2016 3:17 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

NeocoreGames announced today that they will be bringing The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II to the Xbox One next month. The second chapter of the vampire hunter’s epic was originally released for Windows PC back in May 2014.

Starring the son of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II continues the story that began in the previous chapter, as Van Helsing returns to Borgova in order to run out the monster menace that is currently running wild in the city.

Besides continuing to tell the story of the titular hunter, the sequel offers several improvements over its predecessor. The mechanics introduced in the first chapter have been reworked and improved, while new abilities let players continue to refine the class of their choosing. Borgova has also been expanded, so Van Helsing can take his battle to new sections of the Gothic city.

Dwayne Johnson Wanted as The Wolf Man?

22 June 2016 6:36 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

When Universal Pictures started their Monster Universe a few years ago, there had been talk of several different classic projects getting rebooted. Dracula Untold became the first installment in this franchise, after a post-credit scene featured Luke Evans' title character showed him emerging in present day. The Mummy reboot will be next out of the gate, hitting theaters next June. But we aren't sure which project is moving forward next. Today we have word that the studio wants Dwayne Johnson to star in their modern update of The Wolf Man.

Buried within Deadline's report about Dwayne Johnson setting up another project at Sony entitled Son of Shaolin, the site claims there are "persistent rumors" that Universal wants the actor to portray the title character, although it isn't clear when that project may get off the ground. If it's far enough down the line, it's possible that Dwayne Johnson may »

Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, Michael Haffner, Sam Moffitt, and Tom Stockman

Peter Cushing, born on this day in 1913, was one of the most respected and important actors in the horror and fantasy film genres. To his many fans, the British star, who died in 1994, was known as ‘The Gentle Man of Horror’ and is recognized for his work with Hammer Films which began in the late 1950’s, but he had numerous memorable roles outside of Hammer. A topnotch actor who was able to deliver superb performances on a consistent basis, Peter Cushing also had range.  He could play both the hero and the villain with ease.

Here, according to We Are Movie Geeks, are Peter Cushing’s ten best roles:

Dr. Maitland

During the 1960s, Amicus Studios had a knack for borrowing from the pool of Hammer Studios actors and filmmakers to make their own Hammer-inspired films.  While »

On this day in history as it relates to the movies...

Universal Monsters: The Next Big Cinematic Franchise?

5 May 2016 12:30 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Tony Black on whether the Universal Monsters will deliver the next big cinematic franchise…

You all remember The Mummy, right? Brendan Fraser doing his best Harrison Ford impression while Arnold Vosloo pranced around in a gold nappy trying to hide his broad South African brogue. Rather good, wasn’t it? You may be surprised to learn it came out in 1999. Some readers of this may not have been born then! The Mummy Returns followed in 2001 and then The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008 (but we don’t talk about that), with a Dwayne Johnson-starring The Scorpion King spin-off wedged in between. Had these films all came out a decade later, chances are they would have been much more of a cinematic universe, which of course are hot stuff these days thanks to Marvel’s successes in the superhero genre. Universal Pictures got into the act last year »

Comic Book Review – Judge Dredd Megazine #371

Villordsutch reviews Judge Dredd Megazine #371…

Borag Thungg! After spending a solid month in the Iso-Cubes relating to a “cream before jam” incident on a scone, unfortunately I let last month’s Megazine slip me by! Not to worry though as in this issue we have two brand new stories starting with the Judge Dredd: Dust to Dust and the return of Lawless, the continuation of quite frankly the brilliant Realm of the Damned, and bowing out the end of the excellent Judge Dredd: Dust.

Judge DreddDust to Dust (Part 1)

Dredd’s dead, Judge Rico’s in the Cursed Earth looking for the “Cowboys” and Chief Judge Hershey – on the advice of Judge Beeny – is contacting Texas-City for help with a loan of Judges!? What!? What!? What!? This is Part 1 of Dust to Dust from Michael Carroll and the excellent Henry Flint and I haven’t got a »

The Magicians Recap: Fillory of Fear

11 April 2016 7:00 PM, PDT | TVLine.com | See recent TVLine.com news »

Raise your hand if you’re going to have nightmares after Monday’s The Magicians.

The Season 1 finale featured so many disturbing images and twists — not to mention, some purely weird ones — that I need a hedge witch memory patch of my own so I’m not haunted tonight. (I haven’t read the books, so I don’t know how much of the installment came from the producers’ imaginations and how much was pulled from the source material, but either way, you can’t deny that the Syfy series is ballsy.)

Marvel’s Iron Fist adds David Wenham to its cast

Marvel Television and Netflix have announced another new recruit to their upcoming original series Iron Fist with The Lord of the Rings star David Wenham joining the cast.

Wenham, who has also featured in such films as 300 and Van Helsing, joins the show as Harold Meachum, “a ruthless corporate leader who was partnered with Danny Rand’s parents at the time of their deaths.” In the comics, Meachum is directly responsible for the death of Rand’s father.

Scott Buck, showrunner and executive producer, said on Wenham’s casting: “I’m very excited to have David as our Harold Meachum. David is capable of displaying raw, visceral strength as well as extremely keen intelligence… This will add up to a character of complex depth who will keep us off balance all season.”

Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television, added: “David brings both a vulnerability and a danger to his many diverse roles, »

Time-travelling journalist Boone Shepard, the lead in an action-packed new Ya adventure novel, is a hero everyone can enjoy...

Does anybody have any idea of what makes a book Young Adult fiction? I would have said a teenaged lead character was the starting point, but in the case of Boone Shepard it's hard to pinpoint the age of the Australian journalist with a dark past, particularly once he starts jumping through time as well. From the 1960s back to the 1880s, Boone always seems like a character out of step with life around him, and perhaps that's what makes this a Young Adult novel; it's that way of seeing the world in a different way. Here we get thrust into a universe where every day is an adventure within a story within a strange bunch of happenings that never quite all tie up to make sense.

Even so, »
