IPA launches nominees for Satellites

In the rush to bestow year-end nominations, the International Press Academy on Thursday announced noms in 48 categories for the 10th Satellite Awards, to be presented Dec. 17. For best motion picture drama, the group nominated A History of Violence, Capote, Brokeback Mountain, Cinderella Man, Memoirs of a Geisha and The War Within. For best comedy or musical, it hailed Rent, Shopgirl, Hustle & Flow, Happy Endings, Walk the Line and Kung Fu Hustle. »

Dis to use Cinea encryption for DVD screeners

As awards season gets under way, Walt Disney Studios has become the first studio to agree to use Cinea watermarking technology for its 2005 DVD awards screeners. They will play only on the Cinea S-View DVD players, which were shipped free of charge last year to members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and other awards groups. Chicken Little, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe, Shopgirl, Howl's Moving Castle and Casanova are among the Disney awards hopefuls that will be distributed on Cinea-encrypted DVDs to select groups for awards consideration. The discs will land in voter mailboxes as early as Thanksgiving, Disney executives said. To date, no other studio has committed to using the Cinea technology during the upcoming awards season. Sony Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Universal Pictures don't plan to take the Cinea route. A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Pictures said that it has no plans to use Cinea at the moment. »

Claire Danes initially found it hard to disrobe and shoot a raunchy sex scene with older co-star Steve Martin in new movie Shopgirl, before realizing her awkwardness was perfect for the film. The 26-year-old admits she was nervous when faced with the prospect of romping with 60-year-old Martin. She tells the New York Daily News, "The age difference seemed a little awkward, but the movie is about that. I didn't want to be coy about their relationship. It ultimately evolved into something more complex, but initially he wanted to have sex with her, and she wanted to have sex with him." »

Steve Martin Laughs at Fat Jibes

American funnyman Steve Martin has laughed off critics who claim he looks overweight in new movie Shopgirl - he insists he lost 20 pounds before shooting the comedy thanks to a self-designed diet. US entertainment writers have described the Roxanne actor as "old" and "puffy" in their film reviews - which also stars Claire Danes - but Martin remains unfazed because he actually discarded so much fat, he then had to put weight on. He tells the New York Daily News, "I lost 20 pounds - actually, I lost 25 pounds, but then I gained 5 back because I was too skinny. I didn't change what I ate, I just started eating smaller portions. And I cut out bread - that's the real killer, because I was reaching in and eating half a loaf before dinner arrived. All you have to do is that, and then you can drink all you want." »

Thank You for Smoking, a satire about a D.C. lobbyist for Big Tobacco, takes pot shots at just about everything and everybody -- tobacco, guns, liquor, liberals, red-necks, anti- and pro-smoking advocates and self-serving politicians.

It's really about the Age of Spin, where with the right TV spokesperson even Adolph Hitler might come off as a misunderstood individual. If there is a problem with the feature debut of Jason Reitman, it's that the tone and tenor of the movie is far removed from the real world of a D.C. lobbyist. Put it this way: How many times do you suppose MPAA's Jack Valenti got kidnapped during his tenure in Washington?

The movie is amusing and clever but only skin deep. It lacks the acidity and rage of a satire such as Network. While often entertaining, the film keeps hitting the same comic notes. Smoking will find its audiences in upscale and university venues, although it may founder in, say, North Carolina.

Reitman's script, which derives from Christopher Buckley's 1994 novel, delves into the world of Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart), a superb practitioner of spin. And what greater challenge than to lobby for the cigarette industry, which kills upward to 1,200 Americans daily? One of the movie's grand touches is frequent lunch sessions Nick has with fellow lobbyists, who speak on behalf of alcohol (Maria Bello) and guns (David Koechner). The group dubs itself the MOD Squad, as in Merchants of Death.

David is divorced from his wife Jill (Kim Dickens) and too often absent from the life of his 12-year-old son Joey Cameron Bright). When Nick takes a keener interest in Joey, especially on a trip to Hollywood, the two begin to bond over their discussions of strategies for making effective arguments in any debate. As Nick tells his son, "If you argue correctly, you're never wrong."

This is the one area where the movie feels real as the father presents his job in a way that makes sense to the boy. The rest of the movie indulges in implausible subplots involving a newspaper reporter (Katie Holmes), who uses sex to get a scoop; a kidnapping in which Nick receives an overdose of nicotine; a Godfather of Tobacco (Robert Duvall) with a dumb ticker; a Vermont senator (William H. Macy), who never has a snappy answer for opponents; and a Hollywood superagent (Rob Lowe), a transparent dig at former agent Mike Ovitz.

Under Reitman's direction, the acting is energetic and scenes flow smoothly and swiftly. Eckhart and Bright are convincing in their father and son roles, but most of the other actors fall back on caricatures, albeit pretty deadly ones. Sam Elliott has a solid sequence as a Marlboro Man dying of cancer.

Jams Whitaker's cinematography and Dana E. Glauberman's editing are sharp while the sound track makes clever use of vintage songs about smoking.
