Blu-ray Review: Harmless Family Entertainment of ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’

29 December 2011 9:51 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – I have to admit that I went into my review of “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” expecting to feel torture not unlike when I suffered through “Yogi Bear” or “Gulliver’s Travels.” Live-action family entertainment has been the other side of the coin to the influx of quality animated entertainment. For every Pixar, there’s a “Chipwrecked.” For every “How to Train Your Dragon,” there’s a “Zookeeper.” To that end, I found “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” totally harmless, mostly because Jim Carrey gives it his all and brings enough manic glee to the proceedings to keep it from falling flat.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

Like So many family films, “Mr. Popper’s Penguins” is about a selfish, wounded man learning to be a good father. It’s remarkable how many writers work out their issues with their parents through family films. The dad in question is, of course, Mr. Popper (Carrey), a man whose distant, »

A look at science fiction in 2012

27 December 2011 12:24 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus” was released last week and, as many have noted, it bears a striking resemblance to the original teaser for the film that acts as its foundation: Scott’s 1979 sci-fi classic “Alien.” For science-fiction appreciators, the trailer served as a reminder that 2012 has the potential to be one of the strongest years for smart sci-fi in recent memory. Certainly, there have been intelligent science-fiction films released in the past decade: “Moon,” “District 9,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Children of Men” and “Primer” among them. But 2012’s landscape is distinct in that each of »

Over/Under: ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ vs. ‘Love Liza’

27 December 2011 12:12 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

As 2011 crawls to a close and 2012 peeks its head over the horizon, many of us wayward souls find ourselves using the changing of the calendar as an excuse to make big changes in our lives and start over fresh. ‘Tis the season for resolutions. Some of us will resolve to cease destructive behaviors, others will vow to start new things that will enrich us and make us better people. But for each the goal is clear – we’re done with the past, finished with who we were, and starting from this moment forward, it’s going to be a new day. Naturally, all of this thought about what my resolutions are going to be and who I want to be in 2012 has me thinking about movies that I’ve seen where people are trying to let go of the past and begin a new journey. More specifically, I’ve closed in on two movies from the early »

Elijah Wood: 'I was thrilled to play Frodo Baggins in The Hobbit'

22 December 2011 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Since Lord of the Rings, the actor has avoided big-budget epics. But now he's reprising his hobbit role and starring in a lavish Treasure Island adaptation

Is that the Ring? Around the ring finger of Elijah Wood's right hand is a band of silver with strange lettering on it – probably Elvish. As a reward for his lead hobbiting services in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, director Peter Jackson reportedly gave Wood the original Ring. And he still wears it. Doesn't he?

"No. This is Hebrew, " he says, twirling the ring around his finger. "I know, it has a kind of a similar look to it."

Oh.

"I do have the Ring, but it's not inscribed, and it's gold. But I don't think it's real gold – gold-plated. But, no, I don't wear it. I keep it in a little box." Not on a chain around his neck? "I carried it for a long time, »

Michel Gondry films two-minute "Taxi Driver" remake

16 December 2011 3:34 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Michel Gondry is probably the only director who can make the word "cute" apply to Martin Scorsese's classic, "Taxi Driver." But really, that's the only word that comes to mind when watching his two-minute short film remake of the drama.

Maybe it's something about the French subtitles, or the fact that Gondry hired a couple of toddlers to play Jodie Foster's teenage role, or just that he plays Travis Bickle himself, but there's something unbelievably charming about the whole video. His low-budget solution to including blood in the film (he used paintballs instead) and hiring actors to play his cab passengers (they're just cardboard cutouts of heads) made us laugh out loud. And beyond that, the remake is actually pretty darn good.

So is this the "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" director's secret pitch to direct a feature-length remake of the film? Doubtful. The video is actually »

Movies This Week: Young Sherlock Shame Ghost

16 December 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

It's been a bit dismal this month for new releases, hasn't it? Never fear, that changes this week. And because of that, there are several great special screenings, too.

On Tuesday, Afs Essential Cinema is showing Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. On Wednesday there's a sneak peek of my favorite film of the year, The Artist. You can grab passes here at Gofobo (use code "SLACK07C6" if it asks for it). On Thursday, Afs is hosting a special sneak screening of The Darkest Hour; you can RSVP for free if you're an Afs member.

Movies We've Seen:

Shame (pictured above) -- Despite what you've heard about the Nc-17 rating, this isn't a titillating film. Don says in his review, "Even in its darkest moments Shame never blinks or averts its gaze from the unpleasantness." (Regal Arbor, Violet Crown)

Charlie Kaufman Talks Screenwriting: “Do You. It Isn’t Easy But It’s Essential.”

15 December 2011 6:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

[1] Since breaking out with Being John Malkovich in 1999, Charlie Kaufman has developed a reputation as one of the most creative, ambitious screenwriters working today. After earning acclaim for projects like Adaptation. and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, he made his directorial debut in 2008 with the wildly imaginative Synecdoche, New York. He is now working on his second directorial effort, Frank or Francis, and also has a political satire in the works with Spike Jonze attached to direct. BAFTA recently invited Kaufman to talk about his craft as part of a lecture series called "Screenwriters On Screenwriting," and in typical Kaufman style, the resulting talk is honest, philosophical, meandering, and a little bit messy -- in a good way. Hit the jump for highlights and a link to the full video and transcript. We can't embed the video here, unfortunately, but here are a few key quotes from the 40-minute talk. »

Rise of the Planet of the Apes; The First Movie; Super 8; Mr Popper's Penguins

One of the most interesting aspects of this year's traditional pre-Oscar shenanigans has been the growing campaign to earn a supporting actor nomination for Andy Serkis for his typically entrancing performance-capture work on Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011, Fox, 12). Having previously lent thespian credibility to this emergent artform with key roles in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (Gollum/Sméagol) and King Kong (the beauty behind the titular beast), Serkis continues to bridge the gap between acting and technology as the beating heart of British director Rupert Wyatt's intelligent series reboot.

Subtly mutating the bold slave uprising motif of J Lee Thompson's 1972 oddity Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (the most controversial instalment of the original series), this casts young simian Caesar as the accidental byproduct of a vivisective experiment to test a new, »

Terrence Howard’s Wife Slaps Him With Restraining Order

7 December 2011 12:30 PM, PST | TheFabLife - Movies | See recent TheFabLife - Movies news »

There’s not much worse than celebrity domestic violence charges. A house fire, maybe? Seriously, if we could pay to have someone Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind away everything Mel Gibson did between 2009 and May 2011, we would. Oh, how we would! Meanwhile, Terrence Howard‘s wife Michelle Ghent has leveled some pretty heinous domestic violence allegations against the Iron Man actor, in addition to securing a restraining order against him. Some of Michelle’s claims include allegations that Howard hit her in the face, chipping her tooth with his wedding ring, and made threats against her life, including, “If you tell anyone about my personal business, I will kill you and no one will ever know.” Ugh, you can’t unread that sentence, can you?

Ghent filed for divorce back in February 2011 after the two wed in January 2010. Terrence also was arrested back in 2001 for an alleged assault on his then-wife Lori McCommas, »

Supernatural- Through “Death’s Door”

3 December 2011 8:11 PM, PST | Boomtron | See recent Boomtron news »

Supernatural- Through “Death’s Door”

I took some much-needed time to decipher exactly how I felt about “Death’s Door” and how it will affect the rest of Supernatural’s seventh season going forward. It would have been irresponsible to throw myself into writing about an episode as potentially game changing as this one without having a full grasp on it. Furthermore, it would have been disrespectful to the memory of Bobby Singer; perhaps the most well loved character on Supernatural. He deserved a time of mourning. He will be fondly remembered and terribly missed.

I have been rather critical of this season thus far. There’s been way too much angst and not enough fast burning plots. The character development (sure let’s call it that) for Sam and Dean has been a mish mash of recycled material acting as a placeholder while the writers figured out what »

Afs Tackles the Classic Comedy of Remarriage

15 November 2011 12:00 PM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Back in my grad-school screenwriting days, my master's report was about the comedy of remarriage, a kind of film genre cousin to the classic screwball comedy. The comedy of remarriage had its heyday in the 1930s, with movies like The Awful Truth -- something drives apart a married couple and amusing machinations occur to potentially bring them back together. And in the Thirties, the machinations were generally not only amusing but witty, and it was pretty much a done deal that the couple would reunite in the end. I always felt that the comedy of remarriage died out somewhere in the late 1940s myself, although when Knocked Up came out a few years ago, I wondered if we might be due for a reworking of the genre.

You don't want to hear me go on and on about the comedy of remarriage. I know, because sometimes I start to do »

Remake Rant Train: Horror Fans Say No To Frodo as Frank Zito

Woot woot! That's right everybody, it's the Remake Rant Train coming to bitch and moan about another movie that's going to be ruined by Hollywood. This time, every horror fan on my Newsfeed is sending 'Go West Frodo' signs to Elijah Wood, who has recently been cast as Frank Zito in the Maniac remake. By the way, 'Go West' also means die for those who didn't last past the 3 hour mark during The Return of the King.

Cast alongside Wood is Nora Arnezeder ...who is French, while remake king Alexander Aja and Gregory Levasseur will produce and pen the screenplay, leaving P2 director Frank Khalfoun in the director's chair. No word yet on who will play all those hookers.

William Lustig's gritty and grotesque film Maniac survives as a bit of a cult classic today. It follows the tragic story of Frank Zito, a fat Italian guy »

Elijah Wood to Star in Maniac Remake Produced by Alexandre Aja

7 November 2011 10:52 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

The last five years have been pretty quiet ones for Elijah Wood, who really hasn't done all that much outside of some voice acting work and a few smaller films. While some might assume he had been typecast after playing Frodo in The Lord of the Rings movies, he did have some interesting gigs immediately after The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Sin City and Everything Is Illuminated. This year he also starred in the pretty "out there" FX series Wilfred, and now he has signed on for another potentially edgy role in Maniac, a remake of the 1980 slasher film about a schizophrenic serial killer who scalps women to decorate his mannequin collection. But Frodo... what would Samwise think? The original film was directed by Bill Lustig (Uncle Sam, Maniac Cop) and starred Joe Spinell (who played loan shark »

Blu-Ray Review: Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

7 November 2011 3:23 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Charlie Kaufman is one of the half-dozen greatest scriptwriters working in Hollywood today and every actor who gets to utter his words should count themselves lucky. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, now available on Blu-Ray, won him what will, I have no doubt, be the first of many Oscars and it isn’t even his best work.

Yes, I know Aaron Sorkin writes better individual lines and The Coen Brothers create richer characters and Allan Loeb is, well, busier … but no one gets into the foundations of narrative and deconstructs a story whilst telling it quite like Charlie Kaufman.

His films are clever and they make you feel clever while you’re watching them!

If you’re at all interested to read the kind of scripts that writing gurus live in fear of (because they don’t conform to arbitrary rules of structure and style »
