The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Scott Feinberg’S Top 10 Films Of ’10

Please Note: The following rankings and remarks reflect my personal opinions and do/will not in any way impact my projections or analysis on this site, wherein I strive above all else to correctly forecast what will happen, not what I believe should happen. My demonstrated ability to do that over the years is what has led most of you to my site, and any failure to do that will undoubtedly lead you away from it, so you can rest assured that I mean it when I say that one has/will have no bearing on the other.

Scott Feinberg’s Top 10 Films of 2010

1. “The Social Network” (Columbia, 10/1, PG-13, trailer)

I distinctly remember sitting in a movie theater over the summer when the first teaser for “the Facebook movie” began playing, prompting groans and snickering all around me — stuff along the lines of, “What’s it gonna be about? A server crashing? »

Kaufman and Jonze: Reunited? It Still Feels Good.

21 December 2010 5:08 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I’ve long been awaiting the Return of Charlie Kaufman: Screenwriter since he worked with imaginative French director Michel Gondry on 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.  True, afterwards in ’08 he wrote and directed the underrated Synecdoche, New York, but since then, there’s been a serious void where his scripts ought to be.

Kaufman and the coolest curls in showbiz.

No longer, or so it seems.   »

Early Reaction: The Green Hornet Is Inconsistent, Entertaining And Funny

17 December 2010 2:36 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The Green Hornet is the combination of a lot of things we never expected or necessarily wanted to see working together-- the writers of Superbad, the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the star of Knocked Up, and a second-tier comic book property known primarily for bringing Bruce Lee to American television. It's still unclear why exactly we need The Green Hornet again, especially in this era of superhero overload, but the movie The Green Hornet, shaggy and inconsistent as it is, makes a pretty good argument for its own existence all the same. I saw The Green Hornet at an advance screening earlier this week, and I'm not allowed to tell you too much about it, though to get into specific details would require untangling the movie's messy script, an effort that's not really worth it. I'll tell you that the audience I saw it with-- mostly »
