Kate Winslet was onstage at Lincoln Center for the world premiere of Woody Allen’s “Wonder Wheel” at the New York Film Festival last night, but it wasn’t the only movie she discussed. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” was brought up as well, and the Oscar winner said she wouldn’t mind revisiting the character of Clementine.

“Actually, she’s one I’d love to play again because it was just so much fun,” Winslet said. “And the possibilities for the hair colors were just endless. Kate Winslet has come on board James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels, reuniting with the director two decades after they collaborated on “Titanic.”

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on ‘Titanic,’ which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron said. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

The four sequels will hit theaters starting on Dec. 18, 2020 for “Avatar 2.” “Avatar 3” will open on Dec. 17, 2021, followed by a three-year break for “Avatar 4,” set for Dec. 20, 2024. “Avatar 5” will then debut on Dec. 19, 2025.

Cameron began filming the first of the four Fox movies last week in California. The creator of the original “Avatar” — the 2009 fantasy epic that remains the all-time worldwide box office champion with $2.8 billion — first announced plans for four pics in 2016. Cinematography is tough to judge on its own merits, because it can be hard to extract it from the other powers of great visual storytelling. At the same time, every beautiful movie shows the signature of a talented director of photography as much as a filmmaker. In the process of considering the finest cinematographic achievements of this decade, this list includes on gorgeous films that — in some cases — achieve more on the level of cinematography than anything else. The past two decades have found the craft of cinematography making extraordinary advances on the level of digital technologies and other innovations, but at the end of the day, these particulars matter less than the sheer impression left by the images and movements captured by cinematographers operating at the peak of their abilities. Here are some of the best examples from this young century.

If someone were to suggest that Jim Carrey and Michel Gondry‘s finest work to date is “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind,” I wouldn’t necessarily argue with them.
