Storyline

This is the first of a series of stories concerning a girl called Mary, and it shows her first adventure at the age of a few weeks, when she is brought in a basket and secretly left in the store of one Billy Peart. The note which accompanies her, promises Billy that if he provides for her and finally sees her married to some village boy, a thousand dollars will be sent to him in addition to the five hundred which is left with the child. Of course the note is unsigned and of course Mary's parentage is therefore in doubt. After this prologue the story takes up this action. Mary is eighteen years of age and Billy has made up his mind that it is about time to fulfill the suggestion of the note and marry her to some village chap. He finds a young country lad, Tuck Wintergreen, who shows a decided preference for the girl and invites him to go ahead and win her, promising his own influence as backing for his suit.
