Sunil Shrivastava (Suniel Shetty), is the son of a freedom fighter (Pran), who fought against the British regime for Indian independence. His father knew what slavery meant and also made him understand the same. He believed that, "It was better to die than to live as coward". With such intention Sunil comes to Bombay from Allahabad to study law, so that he can fight for the justice of the people. But he soon realizes that the law in the city favors the powerful people and the weaker section of the society are the losers. Not being a coward, Sunil decides to take on the system, be it all-alone, and fight them on his own terms. A Saviour called "Ek Hindustani" is born which is the name given by the people to Sunil. Suddenly there is revolution in the air. Every child around wants to become "Ek Hindustani" and wants to live without fear. Sunil's dream will come true when every person in the country will stand up and fight against evil, than live life of a coward. Written by

Another long delayed film
8 October 2012 | by (Hong Kong) – See all my reviews

The years 2003-2007 are remembered for decent films and several blockbusters however, these years are also remembered for something else as well. This is definitely the long list of delayed films that released and bombed at the box office. Movies like Yeh Lamhe Hai Judaai Ke, Ek Hindustani, Khanjar, Hatya, Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahi, Karobar:The Busines of Love and Betrayal all released late and did horrible business at the box office. Movies like Zammanat were supposed to release in 2003 but failed to do so, in 2009 again but failed and is expected to release in 2013. Long Delayed films follow a pattern of only doing bad at the box office and Ek Hindustani had the same fate.

The film had a story told million times and even for being somewhat good for having a story of how a freedom fighter's son has to take the law in his hands, the handling ruins it all. Sunil Shetty is son of a freedom fighter Pran and from childhood he has been taught that death is better than slavery. Such good values, lessons made him a kind and caring young man. From such a good start, one expects a brilliant follow up and decent end. But, the movie gives an average follow up which tends to get better but as soon as Sunil's family members are murdered by the ruthless villains, the movie becomes a mishmash. Yes, the revenge style is different and not typical but Sunil's typical revenge acts are much better than this. However, the movie would be worse if suddenly a kind and non violent Sunil has a sudden change and goes on a revenge rampage. But, such a story should have a better follow up mainly in the second half. The freedom fighter style revenge is poorly executed. At the end, Sunil has to fight for his life which breaks all the rules of non violence. The climax is ridiculous and seems rushed(must be due to the delay of the film, they must have rushed the ending). The film is good only in the first half. Even by the end of the awesome first half with good life lessons, values funny jokes, some romance which is in fact well here(unlike most action films), the revenge and the villains are bad add ons. The ending of the half gives the viewers many clues that the film is going to go downhill. Even hardcore Sunil Shetty fans would expect some decent action, and the change from non violent to a ruthless violent avenger would be better explained. But, the movie has so much crying, so much sorrow that the movie goes completely downhill. Sunil Shetty cries and cires in the second half, even when he is beaten by the evil villains, he only cries in pain. But, then suddenly the horrible ending when Sunil does a Balwaan and Anth style violent action. The sudden change is horribly executed, this is the main weakness of the film. Sunil Shetty is the main USP of the film, he acts well and even in the horrible second half, he does his best. In the first half, he shows maturity and depth is his acting. In the second half, he does good even though the scipt lets him down. The only bad part is the crying in pain act during the final act when he is getting tortured by the villains. Raveena Tandon is good with Shetty, their chemistry is one of the best if compared to other delayed films. She even acts well in the film, better than heroines from her time. The villains like Ashish Vidhyarthi are all typecast, they are lame add ons mainly to ruin the perfect film from the second half. Tinnu Annad who directed and wrote the film deserves a thumbs up for a brilliant first half and a thumbs down for the crass and pathetic second half. He was sick in 1998 which is the main reason the film got delayed, the second half is shot mainly in 1999 and 2001 which is why everyone looks older. On the whole, Ek Hindustani is an average film and is a complete letdown after the interval.
