Good enough

Warning: Spoilers
The award-winning (interesting choice for a pretty prestigious sound award) "Santa vs. The Snowman 3D" is a half-hour animated short from the year 2002, so for the 2017 holidays this year, it has its 15th anniversary. The writer and director is John A. Davis and he got help from his buddy Steve Oedekerk. Both of them are Oscar nominees (in the animation category of course) and this one we have here exists in a 2D version as well from several years earlier. That one was about 10 minutes shorter and Davis made it as well and Oedekerk was "only" credited as a producer there and here he is also credited as a writer. Anyway, I have not yet seen that older version, so let's get back to this one here. I think the overall idea was fairly decent as we have a snowman who is not scared of doing bad things in order to become as popular as Santa. But he is not a bad guy (even if, also with his resilient silence, he has a bit of a creepy thing going for him), just lonely and the scene near the end with the girl and the doll was fine, kinda touching too. But even there, the maybe biggest problem is visible, namely the animation that I did not enjoy too much sadly. The girl's look's are an issue here. Another issue you could say in terms of the visual side are the elves that look like rhinos pretty much. However, I liked the way they were talking like men basically, also how they rant on about women like construction workers or so. Or they need for speed almost on these modern vehicales when they are chasing the intruder feels like it could be part of an action movie. The two title characters are okay in terms of looks, Santa I even liked quite a bit. Visually, he is probably the best thing about this movie. Still, there are many other scenes that had a negative impact on me because of the looks. In terms of the story, there is less. One example would be how they not only make up at the end, but become close friends because it felt incredibly rushed and the massive conflict before that was forgotten immediately all out of nowhere.

On a more uplifting side, I was nicely entertained for the most part. It was also the small moments where the film delivered. One really small, but interesting inclusion was the alarm system at Santa's headquarters including red-nosed reindeers who started to flash and make noise once the alarm was triggered. There is also a funny Easter Bunny reference in here. And the big, almost epic battle mentioned in the title was also not shabby at all and certainly one of the highlights. Not just in terms of what happened, but also in terms of all the characters they got in. Such as the Abominable Snowman and his fight against Santa almost had a touch of Transformers to it. Or also take the gingerbread soldiers whose heat was dangerous to the snowmen. Or the grenade thingey with the bow. It was all kept kids-friendly of course. For me personally as a tennis fan, the Billie Jean King reference was also interesting towards the end. Not gonna lie. It is a bit of a close call and you can debate if this extended version of the already pretty good film from five years earlier was really necessary, but eventually I think the good moments here are more frequent than the worse moments. Let's ignore for a second the introduction where we are told that the snowman is so alone and that's why he cannot speak and in the second half, he just creates an army basically of other snowmen. This Christmas special is not a failure by any means and somewhat worth checking out during the holidays, maybe also during the rest of the year, even if I am not super enthusiastic about it. You can watch it. Or go for the original, which most likely isn't worse. Of course, this is especially recommended to fans of the Golden Globe-nominated actor Jonathan Winters, the biggest name attached to this project and his voice is included constantly from beginning to end.

The story of a lonely snowman.
michaelRokeefe22 December 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Fun for the kiddie set. Not just animated, but 3D to boot. Actually the movie looks just fine, maybe even better without the gimmick of 3D glasses. Very colorful presentation starring, well the voice of Jonathan Winters as Santa. The late Don LaFontaine narrates. The lonely Snowman doesn't speak, but uses his flute to communicate. He is in desperate need of a friend, but even more important is the feeling of being a big part of the holiday season. So the Snowman decides to impersonate Santa. Just hours before the scheduled delivery of gifts for all the boys and girls; there is a battle between Santa and his elves and the Snowman with smaller snowy friends. Snowballs against squirt guns filled with hot cocoa. The two become great friends and this 33 minute show should fit in perfectly with other perennial seasonal classics on TV. Other voices employed: Ben Stein, Victoria Jackson, Tim Hatcher and Steve Oedekerk, creator of the project. SANTA vs the SNOWMAN 3D will make a wonderful stocking stuffer for those young ones on your gift list.

"Santa Vs. The Snowman" Is Interesting To Say The Least
D_Burke6 December 2011
You can tell just from looking at a movie poster or a DVD cover how sugar coated a kids movie is going to be. "Santa Vs. The Snowman" is certainly kids fare, but it sometimes is not sure what kind of story it's trying to tell.

It's only 33 minutes long, but it's pretty predictable. Once you see the snowman, and see how Santa is adored by the masses, you pretty much know how the story is going to go. They're going to fight, and they're going to make peace for the sake of Christmas. Nothing really new there.

Actually, it almost felt like Steve Oedekirk, who produced this film and created the characters, made a shorter, animated, kid-friendly Christmas version of "The King of Comedy" (1983). The snowman had the delusion that kidnapping Santa and taking his place would give him the love he thought he deserved, similar to Rupert Pupkin's delusion that getting on Jerry Langford's TV show would give him everything he ever wanted.

Of course, the snowman seems too sweet to be corrupted. I liked how it showed him playing the flute all alone in the Arctic tundra, and how the sky looked with all the stars. When the snowman gets it in his head to overthrow Santa, he starts to look strangely demonic, which is a little scary and weird.

However, I actually like the battle that ensued between the elves and the snowman clones. I laughed when I saw the elves using hot chocolate guns and hot gingerbread men to melt the other snowmen. I also thought the subtle allusions to the famous, four-legged AT-AT walkers from "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980) were a nice touch.

Otherwise, the short film is just okay. The 3D effects were actually ahead of their time, considering how 3D would come back in a big way roughly six years after this film's release. The character design could have been better, and the narration by the late Don "Movie Trailer 'In A World' Guy" LaFontaine seemed unnecessary at times.

It would make an adequate animated short before a feature film. When compared to most predecessors like "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", all it can do is melt.

Funny child's movie.
Crodley7 December 2002
I just saw this on the I-Max dome theater at the Detroit Science Center. This one wasn't 3-d, but was pretty unique on the domed screen. It has computer generated graphics like "Toy Story" that are fairly well done.

It starts out with a joke that all adults in the crowd laughed at and in fact, I'd venture to say more than half the jokes were geared toward us parents and grandparents.

It's the story of a cute, solitary Snowman getting jealous of the worldwide adulation of Santa and waging a minor war on Santa and his Elves in hopes he can take over Santa's duties himself.

The only complaint I could imagine any parent having would be Santa and his Elves actually behaving war-like during the fight scenes even though it was mostly snowballs versus guns filled with hot chocolate.

My own grandchildren in attendance ranging in age 21 months to 10 years old loved it.

Not cute or light holiday fare
sleeaol27 December 2006
We chose to see this movie as an alternative to The Polar Express showing at our local IMAX theater. What a waste of time and money! First, it is not cute. The Snowman, at times, looked demonic. Other times, he was simply a zombie. He showed no expression or emotions most of the time, and his hollow blue eyes were just creepy.

Secondly, Santa states in the beginning it's a movie about the spirit of giving. Santa and a snowman declaring war on each other is a movie about giving? I'm all for a little parody, but this just wasn't funny or entertaining.

The idea that the Snowman's flute is his voice is different. Too bad you never see or hear the snowman play his flute...not even a "thank you" to Santa.

The only funny parts of the movie were the "outtakes" at the end of the film. Too bad they didn't use them in the movie. It would have been better.

Cute and Funny Movie
cheersfan198217 December 2004
We saw this movie on a field trip to the Virginia Marine Science Museum. After touring the museum, we saw it in 3D at the IMAX theater located at the museum. Okay, the minute I heard that this movie was made by the creators of Jimmy Neutron, I rolled my eyes and thought "Jeez this movie will suck!" We were a high school photography class going to see a kids movie...I thought.

But I guess a movie cannot be judged by it's cover. I loved it! And so did the rest of the people on the field trip, and to add to that, the other high school field trip from Norfolk that accompanied us to the showing. It's about a lonely snowman who sees Santa's sleigh one day. He follows the sleigh to Santa's workshop, and sees how much Santa is loved by the elves there. But the elves see Snowman, and are very mean to him. Snowman decides that he will take Santa's place, and thus a comedy-filled fight breaks out between Snowman and his Minions and Santa and the elves. In the end though...well...I'll let you see it.

The only sad thing about this movie is I don't think it's available on DVD. If 110 high school students enjoyed this movie, kids will love it. I would highly recommend this movie.

You'll be Rolling on the Floor

This is a hilarious spoof of several Christmas stories, and some not of this 'galaxy', all spun together in one of the most clever ways.

It's about a Snowman and his flute that institutes a war against Santa. The rest has to be seen to be believed.

It's a bit hard to keep unbiased in the enjoyment of this movie. I first saw on television in the late 1990's. It was later released with a 3D rework in IMAX theaters in select cities. This is definitely a movie to add to your collection and the new DVD comes with 3D glasses to enjoy the big screen entertainment come to life in your home.

Definitely a keeper and remember to go to the bathroom beforehand.

Good, Edgy and a sure to me family favourite
were_kinda6 December 2006
From the start to the finish of the film I found it funny and enjoyable, I normally find these sort of films appeal to only children and I was worried that I would have to sit through a thirty-two minute kids show with a plot so thin that I am sure a dog could understand it. Having said that, I was surprised to find myself laughing out loud several times during the film. Its edgy and yet innocent humour makes this what I feel could easily become a Christmas family favourite. Adults may like it for the humour as well as its ability to bring you back to your inner child, and children will like it for its characters and its cartoon style. Its battle scene, reminded of when I was a kid and epic snowball fights and the fun of just playing in the snow, with my star wars toys! To know what I am really talking about I recommend you seeing this film for yourself!

It's no Schindler's List...

Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers, not that anyone will care:

I saw this when I traveled to Sydney to meet up with a friend from Sydney and a friend from New Zealand. We were all 18, and for some reason, we thought we could get some (surprisingly drug free) kicks from a 3D flick... ...so we saw this?

Oh man, it was great. I mean... it had a cross-dressing elf. That's what did it for me.

Check it out if you have nothing better to do and there's an IMAX laying about.

It sure beats getting beaten bloody by white supremacists.
