A woman describes how she notices a girl wearing headphones who is of this place but also part of somewhere else. As she talk about her we learn that the two are similar but cannot come together or be in one place without rejecting the other.
This was part of a series made by advertising company Tomato with FilmFour. The series included The Initiation of Samuel Caine and Sh*t Happens. The aim was to make several films of the same length whose only connection would be a sharp visual style. In other words the films were all to be completely different in substance.
This part of the trio is a visual treat. The plot is, well, I don't know. It doesn't appear to go anywhere and relies totally on the slightly pretentious, artsy story told by the narrator. This doesn't make a lot of sense and it feels like they used foreign language dialogue to try and create a sense of worth or mysticism. It doesn't totally come off but it does have some other things working.
Visually it is a real treat. It is stunning and mixes images and visions together effortlessly in a dizzyingly clever montage that works well with the dialogue interspersed throughout. The music is also good and helps with the sense of being lost in the images.
Conceptually it is a good idea and visually it is well worth watching and experiencing. However the substance just doesn't seem to be there and to watch it more than once is to see that it's all style with little or no obvious substance.
