[Warning: The following interview with Boardwalk Empire costar Michael Pitt contains spoilers about Sunday night's second season finale.].
The brooding, ambitious Jimmy Darmody is no more. But the actor who played him, Michael Pitt, says he respected producers’ stunning decision to kill off his pivotal Boardwalk Empire character in the show’s second season finale Sunday night.
“I like it,” wrote the often press-shy Pitt, responding to questions from EW via e-mail about the finale. “As much as I will miss working with everyone on this incredible project, I thought that it would be very shocking, and I’m always drawn to that.”

A decade ago, I helped oversee a “table read” at the HBO offices in Century City of an exciting new screenplay, "Save Ferris," a parody/sequel to the legendary John Hughes’ movie, "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off." The organizer was an aspiring producer, Holly Wiersma ("Factory Girl," "Wonderland") who had talked almost the entire cast of the then-new “That 70’s Show” into reading. She had help: The HBO producer involved was legendary sports announcer Jim Lampley. (How do you think we got such swanky offices for a table read?) But it was only in »

Sometimes studios keep their productions so under wraps that even the Hollywood press doesn't know about them until they begin shooting. Such is the case with Nu Image/Millennium Films' dramedy 'Straight A's.' According to a report in Variety, Luke Wilson, Anna Paquin and Ryan Phillippe have joined the film, which just began production in Louisiana. The story follows "a man who's been in and out of rehab for 10 years (Phillippe) and is haunted by the ghost of his dead mother pressing him to return home to the family he turned his back on years ago. He trots back to Shreveport, only to be faced with his brother's wife (Paquin), who's still pining for him, her first love." Wilson will play the husband. James Cox ('Wonderland') is directing.

It seems like somebody working for the upcoming Nu Image/Millenium production Straight A’s has been burning up the phone today trying to get word out about the project. So far Variety has come out with not one, but two casting reports for the film. First, a little bit about what the movie is. James Cox, who has not done much, but is probably best known for his last film, 2003’s Wonderland, is set to direct. The script, from writer Dave Cole, is about a man who has been in and out of rehab for a decade, and who is haunted by the ghost of his dead mother. This pesky old ghost continually gripes at him that he needs to seek out his family and make amends with the people that he turned his back on long ago. Armed with a cache of pills and weed, this man makes his way back to his hometown of »

In an announcement that comes out of nowhere, Variety is reporting that indie film production company Nu Image/Millennium Films has quietly assembled a new comedy called Straight A's that started production today. In a film that will likely end up on the festival circuit next year, Ryan Phillippe stars as a man who's been in and out of rehab for 10 years and is haunted by the ghost of his dead mother pressing him to return home to the family he turned his back. Outfitted with only a bag of pills and a sack of weed, he returns to Shreveport, only to deal with his brother's wife, who's still pining for him, her first love. Luke Wilson will play Phillippe's brother while Anna Paquin will play his wife looking to reconnect with the rehabilitated Phillippe. Wonderland director James Cox »

"Straight A's" has a perfectly timed title. I bet 50% of those who hear it will think it's a delightful sequel to "Easy A" that follows Olive Prendergast into her quirky college years. Alas, they'll be treated instead to a dramedy about rehab, ghosts, lost loves, and family duty. What joy! Ryan Phillippe is the star of "Straight A's" emotional joyride. He plays a man who has been in and out of rehab for a decade. As if keeping clean wasn't hard enough, the ghost of his mother begins haunting him, and urges him to return home to his family in Shreveport. Phillippe obeys (which is what you should do when faced with your mom's ghost) and gets reacquainted with his brother (played by the just-signed Luke Wilson) and his brother's wife (Anna Paquin, clearly reluctant to give up her Sookie Stackhouse accent) and their son (Riley Thomas Stewart). As if feelings weren't running high enough, »
The story centers on Ryan Phillippe's character, who returns to his hometown of Shreveport after turning his back on the town more than a decade ago. He must confront his ex-lover (Anna Paquin), who still has feelings for him, despite being married to his brother (Luke Wilson). Riley Thomas Stewart has also been cast as the son of Ryan Phillippe's character.
James Cox (Wonderland) is directing Straight A's from a screenplay by Dave Cole. Actor Scoot McNairy (Monsters) will produce Straight A's along with Holly Wiersma, John Pierce, and Rene Besson. Avi Arad, Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Jamie Adamic, and Lati Grobman will executive produce.
