Danny Elfman Recalls 'Batman' Score Stand-Off, 'Craziest Story Of All' With Prince And Studio

29 October 2010 10:46 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

To say that the long (25-plus years) partnership between composer Danny Elfman and director Tim Burton has been a magical one is an understatement — especially for a film score nerd like me. From "Batman" and "Edward Scissorhands" to "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and the "Simpsons" theme, there's a good chance you've been exposed to one of their many, many collaborations.

Earlier this week, we brought you an exclusive clip from quite possibly the most epic box set I've ever seen: The Danny Elfman & Tim Burton 25th Anniversary Music Box (available now). It's a massive collection of the duo's 13 scores together, featuring more than 19 hours of music, an exclusive DVD, and a long list of rare audio, video, and collectible material.

I was lucky enough to speak with Elfman about this must-have set, how things have changed since he and Burton first teamed up, what convinced him to share so many unreleased demos and ideas, »

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Music Box Films) Follow up to the hit The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo finds Lisabeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) and Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) joining forces once again as Blomkvist is about to break a story on Sweden’s sex trade, which leads unexpectedly to a dark secret from Elizabeth’s past. Starts off well, then quickly nose-dives into sensationalism and downright silliness, with a pair of villains who are straight out of a Roger Moore-era James Bond film. A real letdown for those of us who felt Dragon Tattoo had finally breathed life into the cinema’s long-stagnant genre of the thriller. Bonuses: English language track; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby 5.1 surround.

Top 10 Movies About Porn

5 August 2010 11:50 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

The industry brings in $13 billion a year in the United States alone. No, we aren’t talking about the traditional film industry. We’re talking about porn. This Friday, Paramount is releasing George Gallo‘s Middle Men, which chronicles the rise of Internet pornography. To celebrate The Film Stage presents our 10 favorite films related to the industry.

Honorable Mentions: The Fluffer, Live Nude Girls

10. Wonderland (dir. James Cox) (2003)

John Holmes is a porno legend. Mark Wahlberg’s character in Boogie Nights is based on Holmes and the well endowed performer is at the center of the Wonderland murders in this film. Holmes, played adequately by Val Kilmer, eventually died of AIDS related complications and the surface of his persona is barely scratched here in favor of investigating the seedy world of crime that goes hand-in-hand with the world of pornography. - John L.

Brandon Routh and Satya Bhabha Interview Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World

4 August 2010 10:52 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

To win the love of Ramona Flowers, Scott Pilgrim must defeat her seven evil-exes. That’s not an easy task, especially when you consider one of them is Captain America and another was Superman. And while Chris Evans wasn’t able to make it out to promote Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (he’s busy shooting some movie) two of the other evil ex’s, Brandon Routh as Todd Ingram and Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, did brave the fans at Comic-Con and the questions of at a long press junket.

Hit the jump to read what this pair had to discuss including Routh’s video game addiction, his thoughts on The Avengers coming to cinemas before a Justice League movie,  Bhabha’s grueling Bollywood scene and the possibility of a second Scott Pilgrim soundtrack. And don’t forget our interviews with Edgar Wright and Mark Webber/Alison Pill as well. »

The White Ribbon (Sony) On the eve of Ww I, a small village in Germany is struck by a series of tragic, seemingly unconnected events until the townspeople, and the audience, start to connect the dots. Shot in stark, beautiful black & white, director Michael Haneke has fashioned a haunting metaphorical drama that is as coldly chilling as anything made by Ingmar Bergman, and darkly unsettling as anything from the canon of David Lynch. James Cox Exposes The "Billionaire Boys Club"

14 May 2010 9:35 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

James Cox ("Wonderland") has signed on to direct the indie crime thriller "Billionaire Boys Club" says The Hollywood Reporter.

The project is based on the true 80's-era story of a group of wealthy young Harvard-Westlake graduates who schemed to use investor money to support their lavish lifestyles. When funds ran dry in 1984, founding member Joe Hunt fell back on extortion, kidnapping and ultimately murder.

Cox's script, which he thoroughly researched and co-wrote with his brother, will focus on a character created from a composite of several BBC members. That character falls under Hunt's influence and starts committing deceptions that evolve into outright fraud. He must ultimately decide where he wants his life to go.

Holly Wiersma is producing and shooting on the sub-$15 million project kicks off later this Summer. »

James Cox to direct 'Billionaire Boys Club'

13 May 2010 7:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

James Cox will direct the indie true crime thriller "Billionaire Boys Club," based on the true  story about a group of wealthy young men in Los Angeles during the '80s who resorted to murders after their social and investment club went sour.

Holly Wiersma is producing the film, which is budgeted at less than $15 million. A late-summer/early fall start date is planned.

The BBC was composed of young graduates of the Harvard School for Boys (known today as Harvard-Westlake School) who schemed to use investor money to support their lavish lifestyles. When funds ran short in 1984, founding member Joe Hunt and others resorted to extortion, kidnapping and, ultimately, two murders. Trials and convictions ensued. Hunt, who represented himself, remains behind bars.

Cox, who grew up in the Bay Area, said he always has been fascinated by the story and said that the incident is "ingrained in my childhood memories. »

March Movie Review Recap – ‘Alice,’ SXSW and ‘Your Dragon’

1 April 2010 10:18 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

March was a little bigger this year because of SXSW. While Tim Burton and Johnny Depp dominated the box office with Alice in Wonderland, it was How to Train Your Dragon that impressed me the most. While I attended SXSW this year and saw an extra 16 films, it did mean that the rest of the staff saw films I didn’t.

I actually skipped two weeks of releases and it doesn’t seem like I missed much. I missed seeing Repo Men, Green Zone, She’s Out of My League, Remember Me and The Bounty Hunter. Our Tsr staff caught those and you can read the reviews below, but so far, I’m not dying to pay for any of those. Waiting for Blu-ray is fine with me.

#3 "The Bounty Hunter" ($21 million)

#4 "Repo Men" ($6.2 million)

#5 "She's Out of My League" ($6 million)

Though the subject matter is more than a little bit wacky, there's nothing unusual about the continued success story of "Alice in Wonderland," director Tim Burton's 3-D exploration of the bizarre world established by author Lewis Carroll. "Wonderland" topped the box-office charts for its third weekend in a row, easily beheading the surrounding competition with a $34.5 million intake. After three weeks in theaters, the fantasy film has earned a walloping $565.8 million across the globe.

Looks like we’ve got another big opening weekend, with three wide releases, holding a little bit of something for everyone.

For kids and adults alike, there’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid which looks like it’s got some sage wisdom for kids, but plenty of humor to keep them interested. For adults, there’s the addition of Steve Zahn and little known (but definitely recognizable) Rachael Harris.

For the romantics out there, what’s that, yet another Jennifer Aniston rom-com? She keeps making ‘em and people seem to keep seeing them, but some terrible reviews may keep most people away, but certainly not die-hard “Friends” fans. Plus, when talking about a chick flick, eye candy like Gerard Butler never hurt anyone. »

Blame it on the shrinking potions, the magic mushrooms or the marvels of 3-D filmmaking — moviegoers once again flocked to "Alice in Wonderland" over the weekend and bestowed the Disney feature with the box office's first-place prize. Director Tim Burton's latest film took in a wondrous $62 million domestic haul by Sunday's conclusion, bringing the stateside total to an impressive $208.6 million. Foreign box-office numbers bring "Wonderland" 's total up to $429.6 million worldwide, more than twice the size of the 3-D picture's production budget after just two weeks in theaters.

'Alice In Wonderland' To Dominate 3-D Screens, This Week's Box Office Poll

1 March 2010 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

After almost three months in release, "Avatar" will cede 3-D screenings at the end of this week when Disney's long-awaited Tim Burton-directed sequel "Alice in Wonderland" hits theaters. It's a predictably light week at the movies beyond that because really, who wants to compete with the combined drawing power of Burton, Disney, "Alice" and Johnny Depp?

In this new "Alice," the title character returns to the magical world of Wonderland 10 years after her initial visit. Much has changed there, and not for the better. The Red Queen runs the show these days while the fearsome Jabberwock keeps the world's inhabitants living in a state of constant fear. As you might expect, only Alice (Mia Wasikowska) and her pall The Mad Hatter (Depp) can save the day.
