- The agent of a lumber company is held up and robbed of the money for the payroll. One of the Royal Mounted Police manages to get on his trail. Rufe McCullough is the guilty man. The Mounted Policeman sees through his binoculars the figure of Rufe creeping through the underbrush. Upon his summons to halt, Rufe increases his gait. The Mounted Policeman fires and Rufe is hit, but despite his wounds, he eludes the pursuer and vanishes in the woods. About that time Philip Duprey, a young trapper, staggers home after a drunken carouse. His path crosses the trail of Rufe's flight and when the Mounted Policeman gallops up he is confused and follows the trail to a cabin. It is the home of Philip, in which he and his sister, Marcia, are dragging out a pitiful existence. His dissipation and shiftlessness have reduced them to hopeless poverty and starvation. The policeman enters the cabin and tells Marcia of his mission. Thinking that Philip may be guilty, Marcia declares that she is alone and the policeman leaves. Upstairs, Philip has heard the policeman say that somewhere in the surrounding country the thief is hiding with the stolen money. He decides to find the thief himself, rob him in turn, and appropriate the loot. Despite his sister's pleadings, Philip goes out to carry out his plan. While he is away Rufe sees the cabin and makes for it. Marcla lets him in. He tells her that his wound is due to an accident, and noting her poverty-stricken condition, he supplies her with food and money from his pack. During his brief stay, the two become attracted to each other, and when Philip, returning after his unsuccessful hunt for Rufe, is heard outside, and Rufe hastily confesses he is a fugitive from justice. Marcia doesn't hesitate to hide the outlaw before she lets in Philip. Philip goes to his bunk and Marcia is in a quandary. The Mounted Policeman, convinced that the criminal, after all, is in Duprey's cabin, returns. Marcia, seeing him ride up the trail, makes a desperate resolve. Rufe has fainted in his biding place. She removes the money he has stolen and places it on the person of her brother, handing him over to the officer of the law as the robber of the payroll. Philip, who does not understand the situation, voices his protests, but is dragged off to the barracks. He is brought before the paymaster, who confirms his innocence, and Philip is set free. Rufe, meanwhile, makes his escape, and, realizing the extent of Marcia's affection for him, and the sacrifice it has led her to make, he promises the girl to go straight before parting from her. In time his regeneration is effected and the reunion of Philip and Marcia is silhouetted on the screen as the picture fades away.—Moving Picture World synopsis
