The Bling Ring?

30 May 2012 5:32 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Hey, why didn't anyone tell me there was a new Sofia Coppola movie on the horizon? Or did I just forgot. Nevertheless... The Bling Ring is coming and its 'stars' are walking right at'cha.

Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Katie Chang & Claire Alys Julien "The Bling Ring"

Well... not exactly. Sofia Coppola is the star this time out since this band of moneyed kids is an ensemble and none of them have the hefty screen presence (yet) of a Kirsten Dunst or a Scarlett Johansson. And besides, even in the starriest of circumstances Sofia is at least the top billed co-star of all or her movies, having such a distinct auteur voice.

The Bling Ring is the name of the thieving group (above) who burglarize celebrity homes. Expect starry cameos, including our beloved Kiki (who previously headlined Coppola's Marie Antoinette and The Virgin Suicides), Paris Hilton and possibly Lindsay Lohan »

Tim Burton and Wes Anderson: same old story | Hadley Freeman

29 May 2012 4:05 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

With Dark Shadows and Moonrise Kingdom, the directors' 'distinctive' styles are wearing a little thin

Last weekend, in defiance of the sunshine, I went to the movies. First, I saw a Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp with white makeup and blackened hair playing a misunderstood loner (pictured). He is befriended by a middle-aged mother and, despite his apparent asexuality, he is romantically pursued by one of her friends. He is, however, besotted with a doe-eyed young lady, but their love is doomed because she, unlike him, is mortal. The movie climaxes with outraged townsfolk storming his gothic castle, horrified when they learn of his true nature.

After that, I decided some Wes Anderson was in order. This movie featured improbably eloquent children and focused on an especially precocious boy who is mocked by his peers and misunderstood by the adults, all of whom are emotionally damaged and less mature than the children. »

During her 18 years as an actress, Scarlett Johannson has starred in such hits as Lost In Translation, Match Point, Iron Man 2, and now, The Avengers. She may still be in the prime of her career, but that didn’t stop the powers that be for honoring the celeb with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Although the ceremony occurred a couple of weeks ago, she is still processing the experience. (Click on the audio player to hear Scarlett Johannson) Scarlett Jo

If you plan on coming to L.A. and leaving your gum on Scarlett’s star, it’s outside 6931 Hollywood Boulevard, just a few steps away from Graumann’s Chinese Theater, which, ironically enough, is Not showing her new movie, “The Avengers.” That’s okay, about 3000 other theaters are showing it.

Bill Murray Uncomfortable In Spotlight Following Film Release

25 May 2012 9:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Bill Murray hides away every time he makes a big movie, insisting the public eyes him with a "strange hunger".

The actor has appeared in a host of major Hollywood films, including Ghostbusters and Lost in Translation, but he still finds it uncomfortable when he's recognised in the street.

He tells Britain's The Times, "After a big film people in the street look at you with a strange hunger; mad, raw and terrifying. Not so much here (the U.K.), but in America it's like being in a steam room all the time. You have to hide away."

Murray is adamant the problem is so intrusive he craves the chance to appear in smaller budget movies instead.

He adds, "I like small movies like Moonrise (Kingdom). With big movies you have to be the 300lbs gorilla in the room. People expect that of you, and if someone's going wrong, you have to crack that egg for the director you're working for. You have to throw a fit because that's the expectation." »

Lost in translation moment of the day goes to Korea’s I Love Taekwondo magazine, which features Us president Barack Obama and Korean prime minister Lee Myung-Bak on the cover of its very first issue.

Dr Mumbo is sure the world’s most powerful man will be delighted that he’s made the cover of such an esteemed journal looking like Bruce Lee. Perhaps less so, by the words beneath the cover line ‘Obama on Education’.

Trailer for 'Hyde Park on Hudson' is Murray Oscar Hunting as Fdr

18 May 2012 11:05 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

I've always found Bill Murray to be considerably underrated as an actor and comedian, even though half of his films command major publicity.  It seems you could only see his true acting chops in Lost in Translation or a Wes Anderson movie, but with the new film Hyde Park on Hudson, Murray is truly going for the gusto as former president Franklin D. Roosevelt.  And by going for it, I mean a long deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actor.   »

Bill Murray, President?! Watch Funnyman as Fdr in Hyde Park on Hudson Trailer

18 May 2012 5:02 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Now here's a new deal for Bill Murray. In a role that seems tailor-made for awards season, the Lost in Translation star plays President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Hyde Park on the Hudson, which appears to be kind of a whimsical take on a meeting between the leader of the free world and the English royals. Abetted by Laura Linney and an amazingly transformed Olivia Williams as Eleanor Roosevelt, Murray brings an impish quality as the 32nd president, the only one to be elected to four terms. As well, the Democratic icon survived a bout with polio, which was believed to have been the cause of paralysis in his lower extremities. The trailer seems to focus on a visit by the royal family and the hijinks that »

Girls on film: how Tim Burton finally got his vamp right

18 May 2012 2:02 PM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

You can't really be an auteur until you've got your type – and that's just as true for the women directors

Tim Burton's Dark Shadows may have received a kicking from critics, but one person has emerged from the dust-up unscathed: Eva Green, the French actress who plays the evil witch Angelique Bouchard. With her red-lacquered lips, her crazy-beautiful eyes and possessed-marionette limbs, Green's lolling vamp represents the perfection of a type Burton has long been trying to get right – from Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman in Batman Returns, to Lisa Marie Smith's bosomy Martian in Mars Attacks!, to Anne Hathaway's White Queen in Alice in Wonderland.

Critics may be tired of the rest of Burton's directorial signatures – the ornate production designs, the seventies kitsch, the collaboration with Johnny Depp – but he's finally perfected his vamps: peroxide-blonde, big-chested, cinch-waisted, eyes like Bambi's.

All film directors have their types. Everyone »

Bill Murray Looks Oscar-Worthy as Fdr in First Hyde Park on Hudson Trailer

18 May 2012 1:28 PM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It seemed like a curious choice when Bill Murray was cast as the late Us President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the adaptation of Hyde Park On Hudson, but now that the first trailer has hit Yahoo!, the movie looks to be Murray's finest work in years.

Based on the 2009 British radio play by Richard Nelson (who adapted the screenplay), Hyde Park on Hudson takes place during a weekend in 1939 when Roosevelt was visited by the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I, played by Samuel West and Olivia Colman respectively — the first ever visit to America by reigning British royalty. (And, coincidentally, the same monarchs depicted in the Oscar–winning The King's Speech.)

Complicating matters beyond the cultural divide is Fdr's cousin, Margaret "Daisy" Suckley (Laura Linney), often thought to be Roosevelt's mistress. While the supporting cast looks terrific, it's Murray's performance that gets the most focus, and it looks »

Watch: Bill Murray Is Franklin D. Roosevelt In Trailer For Oscar Hopeful 'Hyde Park On Hudson'

18 May 2012 10:55 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Accent: check. Impersonation of famous person in biopic: check. Forbidden love: check. Wheelchair: check. It looks like Bill Murray is ready for his Oscar moment. The actor was seen as a favorite for the award in 2004 for his performance in "Lost In Translation," but was beaten at the last by Sean Penn in "Mystic River." He's continued to make quirky, picky choices ever since, but no film seems to have a better chance of giving him another run at awards gold than period drama "Hyde Park on Hudson," a trailer for which has just debuted over at Yahoo.

The film, directed by Roger Michell ("Notting Hill," "Changing Lanes"), sees Murray play the great President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and tells the story of a weekend when Fdr and his wife Eleanor (Olivia Williams) went to a country retreat on the Hudson with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (Samuel West and Olivia Colman, »

Bill Murray is a Wry FDR in First 'Hyde Park on Hudson' Trailer (Video)

If you had told people years ago that Bill Murray -- of Meatballs, Stripes, Caddy Shack and Ghostbusters fame -- would play perhaps the 20th century's most dynamic president in a non-satirical film, no one would have ever believed you. Fast forward a quarter century and acclaimed dramatic roles in films such as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore and Lost in Translation, and say hello to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as portrayed by Murray himself. In the first trailer for Hyde Park on Hudson, Murray smiles, jokes and wisely winks through the high tension 1939 meeting between America's First Couple, the King

Top 20: Actresses under 30

LOVEFiLM have released their annual list of the very best young female talent in film, based on a combination of critical acclaim and box office success.

Despite being one of the youngest entrants on the list, a star turn in this year’s Twilight sized smash The Hunger Games plus her forthcoming role in Serena (alongside the delectable Bradley Cooper), have helped Lawrence keep some of Hollywood’s finest at bay. What’s more, with rumours circulating that Lawrence is in talks to appear in an adaption of best-selling memoir The Glass Castle and sequels to X Men: First Class and The Hunger Games just around the corner, we think the best is yet to come from our favourite tribute. There’s no change in second place either, with Anne Hathaway (29), star of The Devil Wears Prada and Love And Other Drugs maintaining the runners-up spot. With a mixed bag »

Photo: How The 'Avengers' Stars Looked Back In High School

10 May 2012 10:09 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Our favorite "Avengers" characters weren't always superheroes. Back in the day, they were normal high school students, probably counting down the days to summer vacation.

An image collage posted on Reddit shows what the actors who would go on to portray characters like Captain America and Iron Man looked like long before they were fending off evil.

The display includes photos of Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner -- complete with mullets, questionable fashion choices and bright-eyed smiles -- to make up the fictional "Avengers" High School yearbook.

Scroll Down For Photo

But it wasn't a straight shot to the top for some of the "Avengers" actors.

Before they starred in the blockbuster hit, some spent their teenage years trying to make a name for themselves in Hollywood.

It was during his time in high school that Chris Evans decided he wanted to become a professional actor, »

My Bloody Valentine – Loveless (Remastered) Album Review

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Website

Released: May 7th

There are two types of great records – those that change the world, and those that are just plain perfect in every way. My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless is the latter. After allegedly bankrupting Creation, the bands label, and taking three years to make, Loveless was finally released in 1991. Conceived on a strict diet of sex and sleep deprivation and sounding like nothing anyone had ever heard before, it took the Spectoresque noisepop of the Jesus and Mary Chain and refined it into a new sound – one that would come to be known as shoegaze.

After twenty-one years with no new record, but one reunion tour just a few years ago under their belts, My Bloody Valentine are back with the long awaited versions of their albums Isn’t Anything, Loveless, and a compilation of their many EPs all remastered by the band’s frontman, »

'Scary Movie 5' To Mainly Be A Parody Of 'Black Swan,' Anna Faris Not Returning

8 May 2012 8:22 AM, PDT | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Spoof movies have never been particularly well regarded. When they’re good, like the original 1980 “Airplane,” they deftly satirize many tropes of your favorite films while also creating laughs derived from their own comedic situations. When they’re bad, they’re most likely directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the title ends with the word “Movie,” and they spend most their time recreating your favorite scenes from films in an exacting manner infused with Carmen Electra and potty humor. The “Scary Movie” films have always fallen somewhere between the highs and lows of that spectrum, with the franchise's early releases hitting at a time when the horror market was ripe with films containing casts that consisted mostly of The WB alumni, with titles like “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reaching the point of franchise exhaustion. There was plenty of material to work with, and, admittedly, »

Jason Solomons takes a ride in James Bond's Aston Martin, reports on Woody Allen's Cannes plans and gets lost in translation

Driving licence to kill

Trash fulfilled a boyhood dream last week when visiting the Bond in Motion exhibition down at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, Hampshire. The museum's curators allowed me to sit in the Aston Martin DB5. Yes, the very car I played with as a child, my first bit of movie memorabilia, and I was now sitting in it, feeding the smooth walnut steering wheel through my hands, just as Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan had done.

What struck me was how the leather interior smells of espionage and the driving seat doesn't go back very far, so you really struggle to get your legs under the wheel, but the doors make a lovely, old-fashioned thud when you open and close them. I'm not sure »

Watch a Young Scarlett Johansson Audition for Jumanji!

There's no doubt that Scarlett Johansson has a magical screen presence, conjuring up spellbinding performances in flicks like Lost in Translation, Match Point and now The Avengers. But apparently she didn't have the juju for Jumanji! During her early days in the biz, Johansson auditioned for the lead role in the 1995 effects-heavy fantasy spectacle Jumanji, about a mystical board game come to life. She didn't get the role, as we know, but her audition tape for it has now surfaced, giving us a rare glimpse of a star in the making… In the video, Johansson reads her lines, script in hand, opposite an off-camera casting director.
