The literal translation of the title of this movie is: The ringing of the bell.
The movie made in the early era of the reform in China took a very small and cautious step toward introspecting the Cultural Revolution. It differs from later works in that it is so cautious that it is not even a direct criticism of the Cultural Revolution, and it is not in the same class such as Ba Shan Ye Yu made a few years later. Such cautious attempt is understandable and should not be criticized because the film crew was persecuted during the Cultural Revolution and most of them had just been released from the labor camps not long ago, and it would take time for them, as well as China move on.
