Social criticism that advocates reform
6 April 2004 | by See all my reviews

The literal translation of the title of this movie is: behind the golden plaque.

In Chinese tradition, a golden plaque is rewarded to somebody or some organizations for his/her or its outstanding performance. This symbol of reward and achievement has lasted for thousands of years and is retained in the post-revolutionary era.

This movie advocates the reform by criticizing the wrong doings of the winner of the golden plaque: after winning the reward for their achievement, things begun to slow down and in order to keep the reward, illegal or at least, immoral activities were conducted instead of honestly working hard. Such social criticism made one and half decade ago still applies today and this movie should be re-released again and again in China to serve as a reminder of honestly working hard to win.
