The literal translation of the title of this film is: The love of father and daughter.
According to traditional Confucian teaching, fathers are not supposed to show their affection to their kids such as saying: I love you. This is the 20th century and the father was struggling try to overcome the old teaching while the daughter was trying equally hard to understand the father. For non-Chinese, the film might be difficult to understand if you are unfamiliar with traditional Confucian teachings.
