It looks as if this is a staged dash along a Pawtucket thoroughfare to me. A couple of dozen residents line the street to watch the fire department's carriages hurtle along the road, pulled by galloping horses. The good townsfolk don't look particularly excited judging by the way they stand around with their hands in their pockets, and I doubt whether moviegoers of the time would have been particularly overawed either. In fact the good townsfolk look as if they're waiting for the heroic firemen to pass so that they can get to the other side of the street - somewhere most people wouldn't travel to watch this uninspired early film.

Pawtucket Fire Department (1903)

The Biograph company took their cameras to Pawtucket where they filmed this one minute movie, which shows the fire department racing down the street. The camera is set up pretty far away but it captures several horse-drawn carriages as they rush to a fire (or getting a cat down from a tree). There's certainly nothing ground-breaking about this film but it's slightly entertaining just due to how fast the horses are racing through the streets and by the fact that the people on the street don't seem to take notice or be bothered by them.

Again, nothing ground-breaking but it's cool to see the footage.
