Exclusive: The Brothers Strause Talk Skyline Part 1

25 October 2010 1:00 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

These days big budget films are a staple of movie-going fare. Big stars, huge budgets, and giant “event” pictures are given wide release and fill cineplexes around the world. For decades it has been the formula that has fueled what many refer to as “Hollywood.” But times are changing. Technology is seeing to that.

And as the state of the art advances, costs of cameras come down, and with the advent of the High Definition Digital format, the “Hollywood Formula” is being adapted by some very gifted filmmakers, and they are using it to their – and our – advantage.

Enter visual FX wizards and filmmakers, Colin and Greg Strause. Years of working as two of the industry’s most sought after visual FX artists provided them with the opportunity to direct their first film, the highly debated Alien vs. Predator: Requiem. After enduring the promises and betrayals inherent with working in the studio system, »

14 October 2010 10:54 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

A few weeks back Momentum Pictures gave UK fans their first look at the upcoming alien invasion flick Skyline, releasing a short trailer that really didn't give too much away in terms of what to expect (barring of course the obvious). Well, now we can get a much better insight into the film with the latest UK trailer, which is very similar to the North American one released a few days back but does contain the odd piece of alternative footage.

Check it out now...

The second feature from Avpr: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem directors the Brothers Strause (who are also notable for their impressive visual effects work on a host of eye-candy blockbusters such as 2012, 300, Avatar, The Incredible Hulk and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines via their VFX company Hydraulx Studios), Skyline stars Eric Balfour (24), Scottie Thompson (Star Trek), David Zayas (The Expendables), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Brittany Daniel »

Friday Schedule Announced for 2010 San Diego Comic-Con; Highlights Include The Green Hornet, Star Wars Day, The Big Bang Theory, and The Walking Dead

9 July 2010 10:18 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The schedule for Friday, July 23 at San Diego Comic Con 2010 was just released and coming off the heels of a stellar Thursday, it’s a little underwhelming.  However, it leaves plenty of room for fans to be wowed by new material and that’s always a good thing.  Friday is traditionally the second biggest day of the convention, and this year it seems to be the day studios plan to start the hype machines on a some of their upcoming films that are currently flying below the radar. For example, Hall H will feature Drive Angry 3D, Piranha 3D, Skyline, Super, Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and finish up with Sony’s The Other Guys and The Green Hornet. Friday is also Star Wars Day at Comic Con which means there are panels on every aspect of that franchise.

There’s also screenings of Batman: Under the Red Hood, »

The Slammin’ Salmon (2009) Movie Review

19 May 2010 6:50 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Broken Lizard have never gained as much publicity in England as they have in America – and even there they aren’t huge – which is a shame, because I truly believe them to be a very talented group of individuals/idiots.  “Super Troopers” was hilarious, “Club Dread” had topless gymnastics and “Beerfest” has one of the greatest scenes committed to celluloid – I think all very good reasons as to why Broken Lizard demand more attention.  And so to “The Slammin’ Salmon” – the team’s take on the restaurant movie genre. Now I understand that this is a well-regarded genre and has many devoted fans who don’t like to see pretenders to the crown – I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been perusing the ‘Restaurant Movies’ section of Blockbuster before being banished by rabid ‘Restauranties’ unimpressed with my lack of cinematic culinary knowledge.  So how does “The Slammin »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Slammin’ Salmon’ Should Be Sent Back

15 April 2010 6:11 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The Broken Lizard Comedy Troupe (Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, Erik Stolhanske) have made consistently funny, unique comedies since they broke through with “Super Troopers” and followed that with two films that are arguably better - “Club Dread” and “Beerfest”. They’ve made their first dud with the pretty bad “The Slammin’ Salmon,” now on Blu-ray and DVD.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.0/5.0

Barely released in theaters at the end of last year, “The Slammin’ Salmon” was swept under the rug and will be a straight-to-dvd release for most markets. Having been an admirer of their past work, I was stunned that they couldn’t even get a brief theatrical release for the first Broken Lizard film since 2006. Now I understand. “Salmon” is easily the group’s most ineffective film with only sporadic laughs, the pacing of a sitcom, and some truly awful gross-out humor. Worst of all, it’s completely forgettable. »

Exclusive: Broken Lizard’s Kevin Heffernan Talks ‘Slammin Salmon’, ‘Rogue Scholars’ & ‘Super Troopers 2′

14 April 2010 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Yesterday, fans everywhere got treated to the DVD and Blu-Ray release of the latest film from the Broken Lizard comedy troop, The Slammin’ Salmon. The team had previously brought films like Super Troopers, BeerFest, and Club Dread into the “greatest hits” lists of college kids everywhere.

We recently got a chance to sit down with one of the members of the team, Kevin Heffernan, who is best known as “Farva” from 2001’s Super Troopers. Kevin also makes his directorial debut with Salmon, and he discussed some of the perils of being a first time director.

The Flickcast: So for those who weren’t able to catch the limited theatrical run of Slammin’ Salmon, what can you tell us about the flick?

Kevin Heffernan: It’s kind of a “down the middle” comedy. We return to the Super Troopers roots that we had, and made an independent film that we »

Exclusive: Kevin Heffernan Gets Back in the Ring with The Slammin' Salmon

9 April 2010 12:46 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

The comedic actor-turned director shares his thoughts on Broken Lizards' upcoming DVD and Blu-ray release

After a very long wait, Broken Lizard fans are finally going to get the gang's 5th official film The Slammin' Salmon, which hits home on DVD and Blu-ray April 13th courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. This time out, Kevin Heffernan has taken over the directorial reigns from usual ringleader Jay Chandrasekhar. And while it upholds the usual lunacy we've come to expect out of Broken Lizard, it's a strikingly different sort of comedic endeavor. The story finds former Heavyweight Champion of the World and current restaurant entrepreneur Slammin' Cleon Salmon indebted to the Japanese Yakuza. To pay off that debt, he challenges his wait staff to a contest where the top-selling server will win $10,000, while the waiter in last place gets a broken-rib sandwich from the champ himself. Needless to say, complete chaos ensues. We recently caught up with director, »

Exclusive: Kevin Heffernan Reveals Plans for Rogue Scholars and Pot Quest

Rogue Scholars will be Broken Lizard's next Kevin Heffernan was making the press rounds in support of Broken Lizard's latest comedy release The Slammin' Salmon this afternoon, which hits home on DVD and Blu-ray April 13th. While discussing that film, the subject of Broken Lizard's new deal with Universal came up. According to Heffernan, Rogue Scholars will most likely be their next film. And the other project they currently have set up at Universal is Pot Quest, which will be a thematic follow-up to their 2006 film Beerfest. But Super Troopers 2 isn't being put on hold. It is being set up at a different studio with Jay Chandrasekhar set to direct. Broken Lizard hopes to get all three projects in production soon by attaching other members of the team to each individual film as a director. Here's what Kevin had to say about the future of his »

I Bet You Never Made a Bill Paxton Pinball Machine

30 March 2010 4:45 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

But Ben Heckendorn did. Pretty much from scratch, too, apart from the basic pinball-machine parts like flippers and so forth. He's been working on it since 2005. We showed you a preview of it a few months ago, when it was a work in progress. Now it is finished. And why did he make a pinball machine based on the movies of Bill Paxton? You might just as well ask why Keats wrote of Grecian urns, or why Kilmer wrote of trees. Because why not, that's why.

Heckendorn lays it all out on his blog, with many photos documenting the process. The game has audio and/or visual elements from Titanic, Aliens, True Lies, Frailty, Club Dread, Near Dark, A Simple Plan, Weird Science, and many more. There's even a reference to the music video for "Fish Heads," which Paxton appeared in. Are there also elements from Independence Day, Mr. Wrong, »

Universal and Mpca Knows Broken Lizard Are a Bunch of Rogue Scholars

25 February 2010 9:36 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m a huge fan of the Broken Lizard bunch and while I’m still upset that I still haven’t seen their latest film, The Slammin’ Salmon, I’m happy to hear that Universal Pictures and Motion Picture Corporation of America have picked up two projects from the group.  The first project is called Rogue Scholars, which THR says is a “college comedy revolving around five unruly professors played by the members of Broken LizardJay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske.”  Details of the second project are being kept under wraps and both are still in the script stage.

The Broken Lizard films (Super Troopers, Club Dread, Beerfest) don’t tear up the box office, but they do well on DVD and build up a cult following.  I put Super Troopers on my Top 20 of the 2000s list because it’s so quotable and never gets old. »
