Sun, culture, è la dolce vita, or not. Italy is different than you think.

What do you think of when you think of Italy, sole, cultura, la bella vita? Would you ever consider that it could be just like here. "Tre punto Sei" set in the rapidly changing urban northern italian city of Torino (Turin) Shows an emerging new world of organized crime that blends the tradional Mafias of Italy with the new ultra violent immigrant gangs that have immerged during the past ten years. The Mafia today is much like the drug gangs of LA and it has survived by adapting to the new enterprises of modern crime, People smuggling and Drug dealing. The film deals with the relationship between two friends Salvo and Nero, Salvo is a corrupt cop with a failing marriage sent to investigate a brewing war between the Arab and African drug gangs in Turin, while Nero friend and former love of Salvo's wife is trying to escape his role as mafia son, drug corrier and heir to an aging Italian crime family, trying to broker a peace between the pyschotic new arrivals. In escaping he finds love with Luna a sad Eastern European girl, who's trying to make a new life in Italy and find her italian dream man. But complications happen as the war grows, and la polizia finanziaria crack down on Salvo his corrupt partners and the Mafia empire. This film is unusal for Italian films, which are usually comedies or humanistic character stories, it borrows much from Tarantino's fast and quick editing while utilizing a gritty, luck. The story is an old one and the characterzation of characters other than Salvo and Nero are largely superficial, but the film has merit if not originality. If only for the appealing editing style, loud and moody soundtrack, and the opening of modern Europe to us all. It's not what you think, it's changing and not for the better it might seem.

Warning: Spoilers
I live in Turin, where this film was made. There are some interesting shots of the Mole and orange trams. Many of the locations are familiar and it is nostalgic to me, at any rate, to look again at Turin a decade or so ago. But that's it. There is also a laughable attempt to transplant Miami Vice, The French Connection and every other movie about bent cops and dope barons into a Turin setting but it is so feeble that by even mentioning it give the film a credence undeserved. Cliché after cliché belt along at dizzying speed and thus assisting the director in his manic idea of telling a story by not telling a story. Flashbacks come and go without reference. Locations change without logic. Everyone has a prop. Mainly a cigarette. The bent cop has asthma so he gets an additional prop of a throat spray. I seldom walk out of a movie but in this case my legs couldn't move fast enough. The star of the film was the Citroen DS. I am not sure which model.
