losing to a dead man is true. The "dead man" was Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan. Carnahan was running for Senator, but died in a plane crash in October three weeks before the election. It was too late to remove his name from the ballot. But Carnahan defeated Ashcroft in the election. His widow Jean served his term in the Senate. See more
