They really pulled out the stops on this one. The emphasis seemed to be on an insane pace. Just pulling up a name, Young Frankenstein comes to mind. I liked the ending of the movie with the "song that has nothing to do with the plot". Now, I can't say I've seen songs THIS irrelevant to the plot, but exaggeration is part of humor.
Some might say they were making the chawl residents into "noble savages" but you see them making many human mistakes. I liked the strong plea for justice for women. In fact, there were plenty of candid statements you'd probably never see in an American comedy.
And for us babe hounds, this movie rolls them out without end, it seems. I could only shake my head. I guess it must be because there are a billion people in India, so even if a small percentage is drop-dead beautiful, tha t means an incredible number of women. They sure seem to be able to act better than beautiful movie stars in this country. Maybe its because they don't assume that an audience will accept wretched acting if the body is distracting enough.
One other thing: Indian movie directors seem a lot less self-conscious about messages regarding justice. I suppose maybe the investment environment is different. And freedom of expression must be a little freer over there. I can imagine Rush Limbaugh attacking any director viciously who was this bleeding-heart (though I'm in favor of movies with this kind of message).
