Storyline

'The L Word' follows the lives and loves of a group of lesbian friends living in Los Angeles. The main character, Jenny, is a recent graduate of the University of Chicago, who moves to Los Angeles to live with her boyfriend Tim and begin a professional writing career. Jenny's life is turned upside down when she attends a party hosted by Tim's next-door neighbors, Bette and Tina, a lesbian couple who are about to take the step into parenthood after being together for seven years. A brief encounter at the party with Marina, the owner of the local coffeehouse, suddenly has Jenny thrust into a whole new world that makes her question her own sexual orientation. Other friends of Bette and Tina include Dana, a professional tennis player who is shy but eager to meet the right woman; Alice, a magazine writer who has a brief relationship with a self-identified "lesbian" man; and Shane, a hairstylist who can't stick to just one woman, and Kit, Bette's half sister who struggles with alcoholism. Trivia

Kristanna Loken asked to be written off the series because she was overwhelmed by the mainly female crew. She said: "It's an entire show of women and the amount of egos and insecurities and cattiness that can go with a bunch of women - that's what you get." "It attracts certain people that want to do something different in their career, but the girls were tough." "Sometimes you wonder if they've bit off more than they can chew." See more »

Watch the whole thing
22 December 2004 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I find it interesting that someone who only watched one episode could make such a broad statement of an entire season of episodes. I've watched the whole thing. It's more than worth watching a bunch of straight women (with the exclusion of, I believe, one or two of the actors) believably pull off a lesbian role. It's unabashedly a lesbian show. Written by, as I understand, mostly lesbian writers for a mostly lesbian audience. The lesbian community has been under represented for far too long. While there are some short comings in the script, the acting is hardly bad. In fact, it's the shows subtleties that give it the life it has. These are situations and representations of people who could exist in real life. As the show progresses, it is almost certain to be inclusive to most if not all lesbian life styles. Give it more than one episode, and try to watch it from beginning to end. As a 20 something lesbian myself, I find it a relief to have such an involved show with an excellent cast. You don't have to be a major name in acting to have talent worth watching!! On an end note, I wouldn't mind seeing the writers get into the possibility of an second generation homosexual character... just a thought.
