Nancy Goes To College
22 December 2002 | by (Fairbanks, U.S. Territory of Alaska) – See all my reviews

Here we go with the Return of Nancy Drew... to TV. Apparently this is the first Nancy Drew movie in more than 60 years and I have a feeling it's the beginning of a revival. I hope so 'cause this movie wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, it wasn't too great either but there's hope for the future.

What to expect? I haven't read the books and I don't remember the show from when I was a child so anything goes. Does Nancy Drew here in this movie have to be exactly like in the books, right down to her hair color? Ahhhhhh

  • no. There's NO rule that says she does. Fact of the matter is this is a

movie and is 100% completely separate from the books and this movie should be judged on its own merit. Maybe Ms. Drew is different in some ways compared to in books, maybe her boyfriend's not around as much as in the books, and maybe she's been updated to be portrayed as a modern Class of '06 college girl. There's nothing wrong with updating a classic character... if it's done right. One example - Perry Mason. Compared to when the first Perry Mason stories were written and when the first Perry Mason movies were made, thanks to Raymond Burr, Sleuth Mason had a decent and lasting tv revival not too long ago. If viewers can just open their mind just a little then they should be able to accept an updated character, one who's different than the one they've read so often. And if people are smart then they should know books are almost always better than movies and shouldn't be turned off to reading what they just saw... unless they don't read... or they're lazy like most of society today - why read when you can watch the movie?

Anyway, I wanted to really like this movie but it had its flaws. Right from the start we see Nancy in a 40 to 50,000 dollar mint condition classic Corvette driving wrecklessly to college while talking on her handheld cell phone. I'm surprised the official title of this wasn't "Verizon Wireless presents Nancy Drew." And how many 18 year old girls have a slick car like that? Not too many. Why was that car written into the story and not something that's more middle class to appeal to a wider audience?!? And why was Nancy shown to be talking on her cell & driving badly? How horribly bad that was! That kind of junk did subside and we got to know Nancy and a little about her friends. I wonder, though., why was there that Cuban-Texan chick? She really didn't need to be there. Then there was the whole portrayal of the sorority which just made me wanna puke. Terribly lame. That part of society - the upper eschelon, stuck up, high heels and pretty dresses, sorority girls - should not be shown to the public even if it might be exaggerated a little. There are sororities that are more down to earth (though they still have their stupid, silly little rituals.) It was good to see written in to this one of the roommates who thought the Tri Pi's and greeks were a joke. Unfortunately, Nancy's friend & roommate George didn't have a bigger part 'cause she was pretty good. Also good in a limited role was Brett Cullen as Nancy's dad. If there are more movies I hope he returns. The best role of all, even better than Nancy, was that of the Journalism 101 professor a.k.a. Uncle Phil from Fresh Prince. He was a great presence and a riot and it's a shame more of the movie didn't take place in the classroom 'cause James Avery was perfect!

All in all an okay movie even if it was a little deep at times for The Wonderful World of Disney and even though "dammit" was heard coming out of Nancy's mouth... on The Wonderful World of Disney! Can you believe it?!?! For what I'm guessing is just the first outing Maggie Lawson was superb. Hopefully she's signed on the dotted line for sequels 'cause Disney might have a pretty good thing here. I'm giving this a grade of: C
