Alex Winter’s Frank Zappa Film Sets Kickstarter Documentary Record

6 April 2016 2:35 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Alex Winter’s documentary on the late musician Frank Zappa — titled “Who the F*@% is Frank Zappa” — has raised $876,362 on Kickstarter, making it the top fundraising campaign for a documentary via crowdfunding site.

The previous record was held by the “Bill Nye Film” project, which raised $859,425 from 16,850 backers.

Winter will direct the film from his own script and produce with Glen Zipper. The Zappa Family Trust has given its backing to the project.

The campaign, which ends Friday evening, has an array of digital downloads of Zappa’s music and eight executive producer credits for $10,000. The original goal of the campaign had been $500,000.

It’s also offering Zappa’s house in the Hollywood Hills for $9 million. “You’ll get the entire place to keep, including 9 bedrooms, a tennis court, a pool, as well as the spaces that housed the Umrk, Frank’s private offices, and even his private subterranean Vault. »

Film Review: ‘Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words’

1 February 2016 11:17 PM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

“Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words” pulls together interview, concert and behind-the-scenes footage to commemorate one of the rock era’s most idiosyncratic star musicians. Thorsten Schutte’s entirely archival assemblage is most likely to be appreciated by the previously converted, as its stimulating if somewhat patchy overview of a multi-various career skims over or omits too many aspects to comprise a definitive introduction. Sony Classics picked up worldwide rights (excluding France and Germany) at Sundance.

A self-taught composer and multi-instrumentalist primarily interested in avant-garde music, the young Zappa is seen wresting sounds from an adapted bicycle (accompanied by studio band) on the syndicated “Steve Allen Show” in 1963. Also heavily influenced by free jazz, such experimentation won much attention if not wide commercial success with 1966’s “Freak Out,” his first album with the Mothers of Invention.

It established him as a challenging outlier in the rock field, »

Sundance 2016 Review: Eat That Question: Frank Zappa In His Own Words, A Highly Entertaining Look

23 January 2016 9:01 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

It was somewhat startling to me when I lived in Europe several decades ago that the catchy, upbeat tune "Bobby Brown" would be played regularly on radio. Sure, it's got a good beat and you can dance to it, but, given that the song is about a rapist who is emasculated while echoing the American Dream, it seemed a little provocative for mid-afternoon tunes. There's a certain masochistic challenge to being a Frank Zappa fan, to take everything in right from his Freak Out days through to the symphonic complexity of The Yellow Shark. His art shifted from "Louie Louie"-based three chord garage rock to noodling guitar solos to minstrel-like shows to Varèsian orchestral pieces, all somehow maintaining the unique character of the man....
