TV To Be Thankful For: 2011

24 November 2011 12:29 AM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Thanksgiving is here (American Thanksgiving, at least), making it officially the Holiday Season. It’s a time for reflection, for pausing to appreciate those people and things we’re most grateful for, and for focusing on what’s really important in life. Television. Here are just a few of the many things I am grateful for this year.

***I don’t follow baseball when it’s not the Cubbies, and therefor missed the spectacular Game Six of the World Series. Its utter epicness, however, demands that any fan of televised sports at least mention it in any discussion of this nature. A great game, and one of the TV moments of 2011 that I’m most sorry to have missed.

Now that we’ve seen trailers for both Mirror, Mirror (the rom-com take on a battle-ready Snow White starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and Armie Hammer) and Snow White and the Huntsman (the darker, more action-filled version starring Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth), which film’s release are you more eagerly awaiting? Let’s put it to a vote. If you need help, we’ll break it down for you.

Tiger's Apprentice to Roar Into Theaters

19 October 2011 8:56 AM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

Laurence Yep's young adult novel "Tiger's Apprentice" is becoming a feature film by the very busy Jane Startz, the former Scholastic exec who produced Ella Enchanted. Tiger's Apprentice is about Asian-American teen Tom Lee who is completely orphaned after his grandmother is killed and finds he is protected by four creatures in the Chinese zodiac, including a mystical tiger. Oscar-nominated scribe David Magee (Finding Neverland, the upcoming Life of Pi) will adapt the book into a screenplay.

The animated film will feature a demographic mostly overlooked by Hollywood: Asian teens in America. The success or failure of this film will likely speak to the future of films made for this audience.

Jane Startz Productions has announced several projects in development recently including Muncle Trogg, The Cold Kiss, The School for Good and Evil and Far Flung Adventures: Fergus Crane.

Anne Hathaway to Dream a Dream in Tom Hooper’s ‘Les Miserables’

18 October 2011 5:10 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Last month, Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe officially signed on for Tom Hooper’s take on the classic Les Miserables, set to face off as dashing criminal Jean Valjean and Police Inspector Javert, respectively. At the time, we didn’t yet know who would be taking on the female leads in the musical, but it looks like Hooper has rounded out at least one role with that rare beast – a Hollywood starlet with a predilection for belting out tunes. No, not Barbra Streisand. No, not Cher. Oh, guys, no, not Christina Aguilera. It’s Anne Hathaway! Hathaway will play eventual prostitute Fantine, who gives up quite literally everything (including her teeth) to provide for her daughter Cosette (who comes under Valjean’s wing). She also sings her way through a number of big numbers, the most famous of which is unfortunate Glee fodder “I Dreamed a Dream.” Hathaway has sung in a few features (including Rio and »

Ella Enchanted Producer Spreads Wings with Angel

Jane Starz, a former Evp at Scholastic and producer of movies like Ella Enchanted and The Babysitters Club, and Hatchery Prodouctions have optioned the "Angel" book trilogy to make into a movie. It's about a couple who fall in love, the only problem is that she's half-angel/half-mortal and he's the CIA agent whose mission is to assassinate her. Awkward.

The first book in the L.A. Weatherly-written series is "Angel Burn" and the second, "Angel Fire" is set for release in the U.S. in January.

Cinderella to Get Snow White Treatment

9 September 2011 9:59 AM, PDT | kidspickflicks | See recent kidspickflicks news »

With three revisionist Snow White movies in the works -- all of which reimagine a tougher princess who just doesn't wait on her prince to come -- her fellow fairytale princess Cinderella is the next subject of reimagination. Disney is working on a version with Mark Romanek (who just directed the Fox pilot Locke & Key starring Jesse McCartney). Now, Universal has hired Chronicles of Narnia scribe Ann Peacock to explore what she could do with a new take on the abused stepdaughter who finds her salvation in a prince. Of course, Cinderella has been revamped over and over again in the last decade with some of the movies/TV movies/DVDs including Ella Enchanted, Ever After, A Cinderella Story, Another Cinderella Story, and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time.

5 Reasons to Love and Hate ‘One Day’

One Day

Directed by Lone Scherfig

Written by David Nichols

Based on his book

2011, USA

Around the time of its release, Ricky wrote a wonderful column on Super 8 called “8 Reasons to Love or Hate Super 8“, instead of writing an official review for the film.  Rick loved the film but he also thought there were significant flaws.  He argued both sides for why he loved Super 8 and why another critic would justifiably hate the film. I have decided to do a similar thing with One Day, the latest film by Lone Scherfig and her first since 2009′s An Education, my favorite film of that year. I was greatly anticipating this film due to my love for An Education and despite the meh trailers, I still went in hopeful.  I guess I have to acknowledge the ridiculousness of this column.  One Day is a film that received mostly terrible »

Next up, we expect this scintillating Scorpio goddess will make women purr and men bark as she takes on the role of Catwoman -- previously knocked out of the park by gentile actress Michelle Pfeiffer and revisited by hip urban celeb Halle Berry. The big talk in Hollywood about her new adaptation? That Anne Hathaway is planning to go old school with her act, and will be dressed in a Catwoman costume that looks very much like the outfit worn by the original comic book character. Can »

Lucy Punch Cast As Deena Pilgrim In FX’s ‘Powers’

22 June 2011 7:04 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

FX’s Powers pilot is one small step closer to completion, as British actress Lucy Punch has been cast as female lead Deena Pilgrim, a police officer in a world where superhumans are common and the police must investigate and prosecute errant heroes.

Punch will be playing one of the comic’s most important roles, as Pilgrim is arguably the character with the most development across the series’ three-volume run. She’s a part of the Powers unit, which is called into action when superpowered humans are either murdered or implicated in a homicide case.

The actress has scored a lot of bit roles in smaller films that gained a big following, like Hot Fuzz, Grindhouse and Ella Enchanted. Punch has been featured in a handful of TV shows, most notably CBS’ short-lived The Class. Fans of raucous comedy ...

On July 5, Mpi/Dark Sky Films will release the supernatural horror-thriller movie Wake Wood, a chiller from England’s venerable horror studio Hammer Films, on Blu-ray and DVD for the list prices of $34.98 and $27.98, respectively.

Pagan rituals are practiced in Wake Wood.

Directed by David Keating, the film tells the tale of Patrick and Louise Daley (12 Rounds‘ Aiden Gillen and The Children‘s Eva Birthistle), whose young daughter Alice (Ella Connolly) is killed in a ghastly attack by a crazed dog. Moving to the remote rural Irish community of Wake Wood to escape their grief, the devastated parents are “embraced” by the strange residents of the town, who introduce the couple to a bizarre pagan ritual that will bring Alice back from the grave – for three days only. Both intrigued and disturbed by the possibilities, the Daleys pursue the action, not having pondered what they will do if the ritual »
