16 November 2009 11:29 PM, PST | IFTN | See recent IFTN news »

Ifta nominated Irish director Terry Loane (Mickybo and Me) is readying his latest project 'This Beautiful Fantastic', a film based on Simon Aboud's novel of the same name. Produced by Constance Media's Kami Naghdi (Boogie Woogie) 'This Beautiful Fantastic' tells the tale of an obsessively tidy children's author who falls in love with an erratic inventor – the story will be told like a classic fairytale and will star Tom Wilkinson (Valkyrie, Shakespeare in Love), Christopher Eccleston (Amelia, The Others), MacKenzie Crook (Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, City of Ember), Joanna Lumley (Corpse Bride, Ella Enchanted) and Carey Mulligan (An Education, Public Enemies). »

DreamWorks boards 'Doggy Day Care'

29 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Scribe Laurie Craig has sold her pitch "Doggy Day Care" to DreamWorks Studios.

The comedy is about what really happens when dogs get together without human supervision. Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas ("Mona Lisa Smile") and Julie Goldstein ("Chicago"), who created the original story with Craig, are producing.

DreamWorks exec Chloe Dan brought the project to the studio.

"We were utterly charmed by the story they have crafted, and we think audiences will love it as much as we did," said DreamWorks co-president of production Holly Bario.

DreamWorks recently produced another canine-centric family film, "Hotel for Dogs," which Paramount released in January to a $113 million worldwide gross.

Craig, who is repped by Original Artists, wrote the screenplay for the DreamWorks feature "Paulie" and co-wrote "Ella Enchanted." She also co-wrote the adaptation of the Beverly Cleary book, "Ramona and Beezus," which Fox 2000 is producing for an August release.

She most recently wrote "Left Tern" for Fox Animation. »

Hugh Dancy Talks Adam - Rt Interview

5 August 2009 8:01 PM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Confessions of a Shopaholic, Shooting Dogs, Ella Enchanted... If Hugh Dancy was in danger of being cast as the posh English heartthrob, his latest role has put paid to that. In the offbeat comedy-drama Adam from writer/director Max Mayer, the 34-year-old Brit plays a lonely New Yorker with Asperger Syndrome, a form of autism. Adam's lack of social skills make his courtship of neighbour Beth (Rose Byrne) comically awkward, and their resulting relationship a testing one. We caught up with Dancy at the film's Edinburgh premiere - where fiancé Claire Danes was on his arm -- to talk about playing »

Lucy Punch is dressing up for "Dinner for Schmucks."

The British actress, who was recently cast in the role Nicole Kidman vacated in Woody Allen's next film, is in final negotiations to join Steve Carell and Paul Rudd in the Paramount comedy. Jay Roach is directing the long-in-development laugher, scheduled to begin filming in October.

Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes are producing the remake of the 1998 French film "Le diner de cons" (The Dinner Game), written and directed by Francis Veber. The film is being co-financed by DreamWorks, Spyglass and Paramount.

Punch, repped by Icm, Benderspink and United Agents, next appears in the Universal comedy "Young Americans," scheduled for release in January, and Allen's untitled film, which he shot this summer in London. »

The Ugly Truth (review)

24 July 2009 10:51 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

I’m trying to figure out when “romantic comedies” turned into “let’s throw two really despicable and unpleasant people together in the first act so they can hate on each other through the second act until they magically fall in love in the third act.” Cuz this is a cinematic development to be despised, and possibly one to start a revolution to overthrow. I’n trying to figure out what kind of self-hating circle jerk is involved on the parts of three female screenwriters who collaborate to create one of the most horrid female protagonists since, well, The Proposal, and then go on to treat her in such an unforgivable way... while also being so easy and tolerant of their pig of a “hero.” Cuz this is an antifeminist development to be despised. Not that women writers must always create likeable female characters, but even complicated, fucked-up female characters »

trailer break: ‘The Ugly Truth’

6 July 2009 10:46 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Oh god, she’s one of those, isn’t she? Background checks before a first date. Assuming something a guy wrote in his online profile is the entire totality of his personality and tastes. Oh god, he’s one of those, isn’t he? Women are fatties, unless they aren’t, which is when he likes them on top. These are not charming people. Ugh. Who writes these movies? Opposites don’t really attract, not in real life. And in the movies, it’s just super, super, super annoying to get saddled with characters like these two, no matter how charming Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler may be onscreen in general, and know that they’re going to fall madly for each other by the end of the movie. Because we never, ever get the followup of a few months later, when they’re ready to kill each other. Ah, »

Woody Allen welcomes Brit Lucy Punch

29 May 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Lucy Punch is the next Nicole Kidman. In the new Woody Allen film, that is.

The British actress wowed the writer-director with a screen test and secured the role in Allen's newest film that Kidman had taken in March and vacated weeks later.

The relative unknown, who starred on the CBS series "The Class" and had roles in "Hot Fuzz" and "Ella Enchanted," joins Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin and Anthony Hopkins in the untitled project.

Letty Aronson, Steve Tenenbaum and Jaume Roures are producing, with financing from Spain-based Mediapro, which also funded Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." The film will shoot in London in the summer.

Punch, repped by Icm, Benderspink and United Agents, also will appear in "Young Americans," a Universal comedy scheduled for release in January. »
