Matthew Vaughn and Stardust, 10 years on

Mark Harrison Oct 19, 2017

We salute the 10th anniversary of Matthew Vaughn's wonderful Stardust...

“A philosopher once asked, 'Are we human because we gaze at the stars, or do we gaze at them because we are human?' Pointless, really. Do the stars gaze back? Now, that's a question.”

Comic book movies are Matthew Vaughn's speciality. Between Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class and the Kingsman franchise, he's been a constant and eclectic presence as these films have boomed, and if reports are to be believed, his next film could be about either Flash Gordon or Superman.

But going back even further than Mark Millar or Marvel, Vaughn's first comic book movie was his adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, which arrived in UK cinemas ten years ago this week. Before it was published as a novel in 1999, Gaiman conceived the postmodern fairy tale as a 'prestige' comic; the four-issue mini-series »

Sneak Peek new images from "The Simpsons : Treehouse of Horror Xxviii", airing October 22, 2017 on Fox, featuring (bloody) Simpsons' parodies of William Friedkin's "The Exorcist", Neil Gaiman's "Coraline", plus a disturbing take on a cooking show":

"...in the opening sequence, the Simpsons are transformed into candy bars, that do not want to be eaten.

"Then in another segment, when 'Maggie' becomes possessed...

"... an exorcist is called in to 'de-spirit' her.."

"Treehouse of Horror" is a series of Halloween specials within "The Simpsons: series, each consisting of three separate, self-contained segments.

These segments usually involve the Simpson family in some horror, science fiction, or supernatural setting. They take place outside the show's normal continuity and completely abandon any pretense of being realistic, being known for their far more violent and much darker nature than an average Simpsons episode.

The first "Treehouse of Horror" aired October 25, 1990, as part »

Bumblebee - John Cena Joins The Cast, Film Gets New Release Date And Synopsis

The Transformers franchise may never actually end. Transformers: The Last Knight, which has seen its domestic theatrical run nearly come to a complete close, only made $128.8 million domestically, down from the fourth chapter's $245 million, and Dark of the Moon's $352 million. In olden days, this would spell disaster for a blockbuster franchise, but due to growing global markets where Transformers has had insane success, there will be no shortage of Transformers films in the coming years. In fact, Transformers is becoming a proper movie universe like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC Extended Universe, and Dark Universe, with the next film set to be the spinoff titled Bumblebee.

Today, in a press release, Paramount Pictures announced a new release date, new cast members, and a synopsis for the first of the spinoff films following Michael Bay's departure from directing the series -- as he promised. Production started today, with Bumblebee now »

Why Sony Pictures Animation Still Needs a Big Hit – and Where It Might Come From

Annecy, France — Having sprinted to deliver toon movies this year in near record time, Sony Pictures Animation has a brace of new animated feature originals on deck for potential 2020/21 release, Kristine Belson, Sony Pictures Animation president announced at France’s Annecy Festival Thursday night, delivering a masterclass on Re-Shaping Sony Pictures Animation.

Four of the five projects which Belson went on to talk about in some detail, without implying they will be Spa’s only releases over 2020/21, are from first-time directors.

In contrast, Spa looks set not to release any movie at all in 2019, she added.

That may seem like an original move by a new Hollywood animation studio head, but it’s one way of confronting Spa’s major challenge. Producing animated features since 2006’s “Open Season,” Sony Pictures Animation has still to fire up a “Despicable Me” size franchise which can, as Belson out, provide a transformational moment, »

Terrifying indie darling Little Nightmares is being adapted for TV, with Henry Selick directing

Well, that didn’t take long! Little Nightmares officially released for PS4, XBox One, and PC back in April to positive reviews, and already the title is being adapted into a television series. The game will be adapted by Joe and Anthony Russo, who are the minds behind the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War; the two will serve as executive producers for the series.

The project is a result of production company DJ2 Entertainment noticing the game prior to its release, and partnering with Bandai Namco while the game was in development. The Russo brothers eventually won out on a bidding war for the rights to adapt the title.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot episode will be directed by none other than The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick. At this time, Selick is only attached to the pilot episode, but the article does state that there is a »

What do a horror/puzzle video game, the directors of Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War, and the writer/director of the Oscar-nominated Coraline and The Nightmare before Christmas all have in common? Apparently they're all coming together for a TV series based on the hit Tarsier Studios game, Little Nightmares. That's a pretty crazy combination of talent for a number of reasons, namely that Joe and Anthony Russo are insanely busy with their Marvel responsibilities over the next couple of years and that Henry Selick has not written, directed, or produced a major project in nearly a … »
