Joanna Eberhart, a wildly succesful president of a TV Network, after a series of shocking events suffers a nervous breakdown and is moved by her milquetoast of a husband, Walter, from Manhattan to the chic, upper-class and very modern planned community of Stepford, Connecticut. Once there, she makes good friends with the ascerbic Bobbie Markowitz, a jewish writer who's also a recovering alcoholic. Together they find out, much to their growing stupor and-then horror, that all the housewives in town are strangely blissful, and somehow... doomed. What is going on behind the closed doors of the Stepford Men's Association and the Stepford Day Spa? Why is everything perfect here? Will it be too late for Joanna and Bobbie when they finally find out? Written by Miguel Cane <>

A disappointing success- if there is such a thing.
23 July 2004 | by (Houston, Texas) – See all my reviews

The Stepford Wives did what it set out to do. It took the dark and creepy story of 1975 and turned it into a black comedy- and that was its smartest move. To remake this film into a mysterious thriller like the original, would have been a huge mistake. So it is only fair to recognize that its intention was to make you laugh, and it did just that. Although the film isn't overflowing with comedy, it is filled with its fair share of good humor. The best thing the movie had going for it was the element of surprise. The original 'Stepford' wasn't the most successful film, so it is highly possible that a large amount of today's audience has never seen the original movie. But even if you havn't seen the original, the trailer to this remake gives away almost every surprise in the film. In result, the viewer's enjoyment rests heavily on the last few minutes of the film. This is where the disappointment comes in. I won't give away details, but the ending does have a huge unexpected twist; but it's just not satisfying enough. Even though I completely enjoyed myself while watching the film, and was genuinely shocked at the twist ending, I was still disappointed when the movie ended. But as I look back on seeing the film, I realize that there is no way around this disappointment. The flaws lie in the story, not just the adapted screenplay. See the film, and if it's a let down, ask yourself how it could have actually been better than what it was. The answer is it couldn't be. The story is just a flop in its own way. It leads you on a long and winding road of intrigue, but in the end, you know this can't take you anywhere but to a dead end. And even though there are some loose ends that leave you unsatisfied and partly confused, you have to realize that this film was made all in fun. And with that on your mind, you should enjoy yourself in watching the movie, but don't get your hopes up for too grand of a finale, because most of the film you can see in the preview. Because of Stepford's comedic turn, I grant this film 7 STARS. And I'm sure it would be easier to agree with me if you didn't see the trailer before you saw the film itself.
