'Angry Birds' #1 Domestically, 'Captain America' Tops $1 Billion and It's 'Apocalypse' Overseas

22 May 2016 9:03 AM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Sony's The Angry Birds Movie took the number one spot at the domestic box office this weekend, pushing two-time champion, Captain America: Civil War, to second place as it begins its third week in release. Civil War's weekend, however, wasn't only about the domestic box office as it has now become the first 2016 release to cross $1 billion worldwide, doing so in just 24 days of global release. The weekend's two other new wide releases, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, finished in third and fourth position respectively. Also, X-Men: Apocalypse launched overseas one week ahead of its domestic debut and hauled in over $100 million. Based on Rovio's mobile game application, Angry Birds finished just ahead of weekend tracking with an estimated $39 million. The best comparison from a performance standpoint is 2006's Over the Hedge, which also opened the week before Memorial Day weekend and scored a $38.4 million opening. That film, »

'Neighbors 2' Tops Thursday Previews with $1.67M, 'Angry Birds' Hits $800k & 'Nice Guys' Finish Last

It could be a photo finish atop this weekend's box office charts as Captain America: Civil War will attempt to hold off Sony's Angry Birds. Meanwhile, Universal's Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising faces a situation where the sequel isn't likely to top the original and Warner Bros. is hoping for the best with The Nice Guys, which has enjoyed the best reviews among the weekend's new wide releases, but finds itself jostling for attention among several higher profile releases. The fight atop the box office will have a lot to do with whether or not Sony's Angry Birds is able to breakout as it charges into 3,932 theaters. Based on Rovio's mobile platform video game, the 3D animated feature carries a $73 million budget and a strong ensemble of comedic voice talent. The budgetary figure places it in the same range as Illumination's Despicable Me franchise of films, the first of which was »

Comedian, actor, writer and producer Garry Shandling, known for “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and “The Larry Sanders Show,” died Thursday, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed. He was 66.

A spokesman for the Lapd said they received a 911 call from Shandling’s home on Thursday, saying the comedian suffered from a “medical emergency.” He later died at an L.A. hospital.

Shandling wasn’t known to be suffering from any illnesses, and just a few days ago retweeted Kathy Griffin’s photo of himself, her and Bob Odenkirk.

Chicago-born Shandling got his start as a writer before creating the sitcom "It's Garry Shandling's Show" at Showtime in which he played a stand-up comedian aware of the fact that he is a sitcom character.

He shot to global fame though with HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" which ran throughout much of the 1990s in which he played the host of a fictional late-night talk show. He subsequently appeared or lent his voice to numerous films including "Zoolander," "Over the Hedge, »

Second Opinion – Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)

15 March 2016 12:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Kung Fu Panda 3, 2016.

Directed by Jennifer Yuh & Alessandro Carloni.

Starring Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Bryan Cranston, J.K. Simmons, Kate Hudson, James Hong, Randall Duk Kim, Seth Rogen, David Cross, Lucy Liu and Jackie Chan.

Third instalment of the animated series, in which Po, the titular panda, finally meets his real father, and also has to do battle with Kai, a supernatural villain who drains the chi from every Kung Fu Master he encounters.

The quality of Dreamworks’ animated films has always varied greatly – from poor (Shark Tale) to great (Shrek, How to Train Your Dragon) with a whole lot of mediocre in between (Bee Movie, Rise of the Guardians, Over the Hedge). Their track record with sequels has been likewise uneven – although they were financially successful, each Shrek was weaker than the last, and I’d personally rather watch the new Ghostbusters trailer on an endless »

Back in 2014, Sony Pictures Animation announced that their new Smurfs movie will be completely animated, ditching the live-action/CGI hybrid format the studio used in 2011's The Smurfs and 2013's The Smurfs 2. Sony has set a March 31, 2017 release date, with a voice cast that includes Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf, Demi Lovato as Smurfette and Rainn Wilson as the nefarious Gargamel. USA Today has the first photos from this animated adventure, now entitled Smurfs: The Lost Village, which gives us our first look at three previously-unannounced characters, Hefty Smurf (voiced by Joe Manganiello), Clumsy Smurf (voiced by Jack McBrayer) and Brainy Smurf (voiced by Danny Pudi).

Smurfs: The Lost Village, which was previously entitled Get Smurfy, follows Smurfette, as she sets off on a journey to find a fabled Smurf village before Gargamel does, bringing along her three brothers Hefty, Clumsy and Brainy. Director Kelly Asbury describes Hefty as »
