The First: Sean Penn is heading to Mars in new sci-fi series

20 September 2017 9:14 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Joseph Baxter Sep 21, 2017

Sean Penn is set to star in a space exploration series on Channel 4 called The First, from the creator of House Of Cards...

Sean Penn, the controversial, two-time-Oscar-winning actor who first achieved notable acclaim for playing one-liner-spouting stoner Jeff Spicoli, is about to do something that he’s never done in his storied acting career: headline a television series, specifically, streaming series The First for Channel 4 and Hulu.

Penn, like an increasing amount of A-list actors, will take the television plunge in this new project, which was given a straight-to-series order by the streaming outlet back in May - a space exploration-themed story set in a near-future that will follow humanity’s first mission to colonise Mars.

Interestingly, the visionary behind the series is not one typically associated with the space/sci-fi/adventure genre. Beau Willimon, who is best known as the creator, writer and »

Sean Penn has signed on to star in Beau Willimon’s upcoming Hulu series “The First,” Variety has learned.

“The First” is set in the near future and follows the first human mission to Mars. The series explores the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization. Hulu gave the show a straight-to-series order in May. The exact details of Penn’s role are being kept under wraps.

Penn has appeared on various television shows throughout his career, but this marks his first regular role on a series. He has previously appeared on shows such as “Ellen,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “Friends.”

Penn is one of the most accomplished film actors of his generation, having been nominated for five Academy Awards throughout his career. He was nominated for Best Actor for “Dead Man Walking,” “Sweet and Lowdown,” and “I Am Sam” before winning his first Oscar in 2003 for his role »

Initially the film wasn’t really popular in theaters which is kind of surprising given the fact that it was well-liked once it hit the video stores. You remember those, don’t you? The Sandlot was one of the many kid films that growing up was a real inspiration to children that watched it. So what are the guys up to now? Tom Guiry-Scottie Smalls Guiry is still acting these days and has been in films such as The Revenant and Mystic River. Mostly he lives a quiet life in New Jersey with his family. Robb takes us through the impact that alcohol had on his life,

Once again, for this week's Geeks Vs Loneliness, we're eschewing our usual introduction, that you can find on the 100+ other posts in this series (some links can be found further down the page). Instead, we're handing over to Robb, who asked us if he could write a piece entitled 'alchohol, depression and movies: the trilogy of my 20s'). With a fair smattering of film quotes - just in case the context isn't clear - here it is. Huge thanks to you, Robb...

(See previous post: Fourth of July Movies: Escapism During a Weird Year.) On the evening of the Fourth of July, besides fireworks, fire hazards, and Yankee Doodle Dandy, if you're watching TCM in the U.S. and Canada, there's the following: Peter H. Hunt's 1776 (1972), a largely forgotten film musical based on the Broadway hit with music by Sherman Edwards. William Daniels, who was recently on TCM talking about 1776 and a couple of other movies (A Thousand Clowns, Dodsworth), has one of the key roles as John Adams. Howard Da Silva, blacklisted for over a decade after being named a communist during the House Un-American Committee hearings of the early 1950s (Robert Taylor was one who mentioned him in his testimony), plays Benjamin Franklin. Ken Howard is Thomas Jefferson, a role he would reprise in John Huston's 1976 short Independence. (In the short, Pat Hingle was cast as John Adams; Eli Wallach was Benjamin Franklin.) Warner »

The Opening Night Selection for the 2017 New York Film Festival is Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying”

13 June 2017 3:32 AM, PDT | Hollywoodnews.com | See recent Hollywoodnews.com news »

Believe it or not, we’re already at the point in the year where fall film festival announcements are being made. Yesterday afternoon, the first shot across the bow was fired when the New York Film Festival announced Richard Linklater’s Last Flag Flying as it’s Opening Night Selection. Getting a bit of a head start on things, Nyff is planting a flag, no pun intended, on this flick as an awards vehicle. Linklater nearly took home an Oscar for Boyhood, so he’s certainly due. Could this do it for him? Time will tell, but getting this prestigious slot at Nyff is a strong first step. There’s plenty of reason to be excited for this one. This film is a road trip tale, working as a sort of pseudo sequel to the classic The Last Detail. In the press release, Film Society described it thusly: “In Richard Linklater’s lyrical road movie, »
