As the film is mainly told from a child's point of view, director Gabriele Salvatores instructed his director of photography Italo Petriccione to shoot most of the film at a child's height.

One scene breaks the realism in the movie: Michele is approaching the hole, and we can hear loud music and sounds of birds. When he climbs a fence, he yells "Shut up" (or something like that), and both the music and the birds stop at once, and the scene continues in silence.
