Boxoffice preview: Vengeance for 'Brothers' in arms

12 August 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

With lowbrow comedy the seeming genre of choice this summer, Sony Pictures' Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo should do some business this weekend. But the film will be up against the John Singleton-directed Four Brothers, which is likely to take the top spot among the frame's new offerings. Also bowing is Universal Pictures' horror thriller The Skeleton Key and Miramax's long-shelved The Great Raid. A remake of the classic Western The Sons of Katie Elder, Brothers alters the revenge story to create more crossover appeal. Attracting primarily males, it still seems to have some traction with older females, which should propel it to the top of the heap. The film is looking to gross in the high teens, with a possibility of crossing into the $20 million range. »

But the film will be up against the John Singleton-directed Four Brothers, which is likely to take the top spot among the frame's new offerings. Also bowing is Universal Pictures' horror thriller The Skeleton Key and Miramax's long-shelved The Great Raid. Singleton, fresh off the Sundance fave Hustle & Flow, which he produced, has again partnered with Paramount Pictures, with whom he recently signed a three-picture deal. This time around, the re-energized director has signed up Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Garrett Hedlund and Andre Benjamin (from the hip-hop duo OutKast) to play foster brothers who return home to avenge the death of their foster mother. The R-rated film will open in 2,533 theaters. Released in December 1999 by Buena Vista, Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo swindled its way to $65 million and attracted a good-sized following on DVD. But Disney passed on the sequel, giving Sony a chance to capitalize on Schneider's raunchy humor. »

Miramax plans appeal of R rating on 'Raid'

4 August 2005 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Miramax Films plans to appeal the R rating that the Rating and Classification Administration has awarded to the World War II drama The Great Raid, which opens Aug. 12. Citing "strong war violence and brief language," the board restricted the movie to audiences under 17 unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. "There have been a number of war films with comparable levels of violence that were given a 'PG-13' rating, including such films as Hotel Rwanda, Master and Commander and Pearl Harbor ..." said Miramax co-head Harvey Weinstein, whose tenure ends Sept. 30. "The violence is not there to shock the audience, rather it's to show them an accurate depiction of what happened and is by no means excessive." »
