The bittersweet portrayal of the American dream
The story of Andrew Carnegie is redolent with all the positives and negatives of the ultimate American dream with all it's splendor, tragedy, and regret. This incredible documentary of the Scottish-born Carnegie, replete with kindness balanced with heartlessness, philanthropy offset by thoughtless disdain, is a touchstone for understanding the single-minded lust for profit in late 19th century America. It's almost pitiful to watch Carnegie trying to make up for how he acquired his wealth with his frustrated efforts to foster world peace near the end of his life.
It should be a cautionary tale for today's boomer generation and it's headlong pursuit of material things and the acclaim of man and media...
"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" Mark 8:36
