"The Lone Ranger" gets Tom Wilkinson, Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp back for main roles

7 December 2011 12:56 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

After several starts and stops, it looks like production on "The Lone Ranger" is finally ready to go full steam ahead. Disney has officially green lit the film to go into production, and that means all the major cast members are coming back to the project.

Deadline is reporting that the film's major players like Armie Hammer, Johnny Depp and Ruth Wilson have kept their schedules open and are now back on board to film "The Lone Ranger." In addition, Tom Wilkinson is finalizing his deal to play lead villain Latham Cole, a railroad tycoon in the Old West.

Disney (and we) seems to be hoping that "The Lone Ranger" will be a return to the success that "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" found in 2003. The film reunites Depp with director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio. Though Hammer »

The Rum Diary: Johnny Depp Biggest Very-Wide-Release Box-Office Flop?

8 November 2011 3:23 PM, PST | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Currently with $10.63 million at the North American box office, The Rum Diary has the dubious distinction of possibly ending up as the biggest Johnny Depp flop in "very wide" release — movies screened at more than 2,000 locations. Among 38 Johnny Depp titles found on Box Office Mojo's inflation-adjusted list, The Rum Diary ranks no. 31. With luck, The Rum Diary will ultimately settle somewhere between What's Eating Gilbert Grape?, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Astronaut's Wife, and Cry-Baby. With inflation-adjusted box-office totals ranging between $15m-$19m, those are all releases from the 1990s — before Depp became a worldwide box-office superstar as a result of Gore Verbinski's international blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. In case The Rum Diary manages to outgross The Astronaut's Wife, it'll be Depp's second-lowest-grossing movie in "very wide" release. In order to achieve that feat, The Rum Diary will have »

Exclusive: Kevin McNally Talks Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray

18 October 2011 9:12 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Actor Kevin McNally discusses returning as Gibbs in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, a fifth Pirates movie, The Raven, and much more.

Actor Kevin McNally may not be as recognizable as Johnny Depp, but he plays an integral part as Johnny Depp's right-hand man in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which arrives on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD October 18. Kevin McNally appeared in the first three Jack Sparrow adventures (Pirates of The Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End), and now he returns once again as Joshamee Gibbs in this latest high seas adventure, where Captain Jack sets out in search of the Fountain of Youth.

I recently had the chance to speak with Kevin McNally over the phone about his experiences in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. »

Blu-ray Review

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Two-Disc Blu-ray / DVD Combo in Blu-ray)

Directed by: Rob Marshall

Cast: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush

Running Time: 2 hrs 15 mins

Rating: PG-13

Due Out: October 18

Plot: Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) gets tangled up with an old flame (Cruz) in the search for the fountain of youth. Blackbeard (McShane), Barbossa (Rush), the Spanish and English are also in pursuit.

Who’S It For? Did you love Pirates 2 & 3? It’s more of the same except for one thing … there is even less motivation for Captain Jack.

Movie:

Let’s add an “L” to boat. What do we get? Bloat! Oh wait, let’s add a “ed” as well. Bloated! There we go. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is bloated. Jack Sparrow is involved in an escape that doesn’t matter and a sword fight I’m not nervous about. »

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Blu-ray Ilm Tour

Last month, I was lucky enough to go back to Industrial Light and Magic once again, my fifth trip to this wonderful San Francisco facility. This time I made the journey to explore the scurvy pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which arrives on 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD October 18.

Our day started out in the Ilm Theater, where we watched one of the special features on the five-disc 3D Blu-ray, entitled Under the Scene: Bringing the Mermaids to Life. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides brought several franchise stars back for this fourth movie, such as Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow, Geoffrey Rush's Barbosa, and Kevin McNally's Joshamee Gibbs. While much is the same in this pirates tale, there are many new faces aboard the high seas, including newcomer Astrid Berges-Frisbey, who plays the mermaid Syrena. This special feature delved into the mermaids in the movie, »

Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Gore Verbinski, and Jerry Bruckheimer Take Paycuts to Make The Lone Ranger Happen

12 October 2011 9:12 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Disney very nearly pulled the plug on The Lone Ranger because of the absurd proposed $250 million budget.  Director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have spent the last two months searching for ways to cut costs, and here's what they came up with according to Variety: Verbinski, Bruckheimer, and stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will all take 20% paycuts; certain payments will be deferered until The Lone Ranger starts making money Bruckheimer Films will be responsible for any cost overruns. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) reworked the script by Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) to eliminate a few expensive sequences involving supernatural elements that require a lot of effects work. That's all well and good, and I applaud the waste reduction efforts on a movie that should not cost $250 million.  But the gesture is less meaningful when the result is a $215 million budget. »

'Dancing With the Stars': Carson Kressley to waltz as a pirate

There's no way to spoil "Dancing With the Stars" but here's a reveal about Monday's (Oct. 10) show.

Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya, his partner, dance as pirates, he tells Zap2it.

That's right matey, Carson Kressley, the fabulous host who shot to celebrity with "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," is waltzing as a seafaring robber.

"I felt like I did better with the tango because it was the back story of our lives," he says.

Kressley loves the idea of dancing to a song that captures the essence of his life.

"'Legally Blonde' does not have a soundtrack -- much to my chagrin - so we are dancing to the theme of 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,'" Kressley says. "It is very sweeping and piratey."

Initially, Kressley admits he had his doubts because pirates seem so "butch."

James Caviezel gives a strong performance in 2002's The Count of Monte Cristo which arrives on Blu-ray looking solid and with revenge on its mind. The adaptation of Alexandre Dumas novel of revenge was directed by Kevin Reynolds (who brought Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Waterworld to the screen) with Jay Wolpert (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) handling writing duties. The film sees Caviezel joined by Guy Pearce, James Frain, Dagmara Dominczyk, Luis Guzmán, Henry Cavill, Jb Blanc, and Christopher Adamson. Your International Talk Like a Pirate Day Primer

Ahoy, mateys. If you haven't heard, today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day.

Aye, it's a real holiday – John Baur and Mark Summers began International Talk Like a Pirate Day (Itlapd) in 1996.

Needless to say, such an important holiday needs to be honored with more than just an eye patch and a few "argh"-punchlined puns. Thankfully, a vast array of pirate movies offers ample fodder to prepare you to impress your fellow scurvy-sufferers… and we've compiled their best hints.

Yo ho!

Make a First Impression

"Three shillings, forget the name."

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" (2003)

Impress your mates right off the bat with this line. It's easily one of the most memorable scenes from any of the "Caribbean" films and Jack Sparrow's first line ever. He steals the guy's wallet after paying him off. We don't recommend you do that part.

Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger Was Going to Have Werewolves In It

16 August 2011 6:58 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When it came out this past weekend that Disney had decided not to move forward with Gore Verbinski and Jerry Bruckheimer's The Lone Ranger due to budgetary concerns, a lot of people were wondering why the hell a simple western would require a budget of $250 million. By comparison, the recent remakes of True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma had budgets of $38 million and $55 million respectively, and both of those films had some big stars in them. Well, as it turns out, there's an interesting little detail about this new version of The Lone Ranger that most of us have been overlooking. We all know that the movie is being set up as a major tentpole along the lines of Pirates of the Caribbean, and much like that movie, there were also plans for supernatural elements and CG creatures. Specifically, The Lone Ranger and Tonto were going to go up against werewolves. »

Dwight Yoakam Saddles Up To Fight The Lone Ranger!

20 July 2011 3:58 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Country musician and effective big screen villain (David Fincher used him perfectly as the baddie Raoul in Panic Room) – Dwight Yoakam has been cast to play Butch Cavendish, the villain of Disney’s The Lone Ranger!

Played by Glenn Strange in episodes of the original show and Christopher Lloyd in the 1981 film, Cavendish is regularly cited as being heavily involved in the origins of The Lone Ranger – so I guess we now have a good idea of how this film will play out. Yoakam will play the leader of a wild ragtag gang who cause havok across the Wild West, killing and robbing in every town they come across, including slaughtering a bunch of Texas Rangers in what I presume will be the film’s opening, leaving just one alive, Reid. He is then nursed back to health by Tonto and made strong…. and they then set out to take »
