We were never meant to see such things close-up
16 September 2002 | by (Melbourne) – See all my reviews

Now available on DVD, this prettily photographed and nicely sung version of Carmen is as good as any introduction to the opera as a film can be. But when Don Jose and Escamillo come at each other with knives, and you see them singing at each other in the process, it all seems faintly absurd... We were never meant to see such things close-up.
