How Animated ‘Phantom Boy’ Conjures a Superhero Noir Hybrid

21 July 2016 8:03 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

After nabbing an Oscar nomination for the delightful “A Cat in Paris” in 2012, the French team of Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol get more ambitious with “Phantom Boy” (July 22), combining an ethereal superhero with a wacky crime thriller. No wonder Gkids smartly grabbed distribution rights to this one as well.

Leo, a sensitive young New Yorker, undergoes treatment for a serious illness in a hospital, where he discovers the strange ability to leave his body for short periods of time and communicate with some of the unconscious patients. This invisible transport allows him to assist a wounded cop and female reporter in thwarting a mysterious villain from destabilizing the city with a computer virus.

“We prefer working in a context and setting that are realistic but with one fantasy element,” said Gagnol, who wrote the script. Felicioli provided the flat, angular, retro graphic design. “It’s a fantastical, dream image of New York, »

20th Century Fox TV’s comedy team is expanding. Sarah Geismer, who has spent the last seven years at Fox 21 TV Studios, will join the comedy development ranks as a VP. She’ll report to Cheryl Dolins, Svp of comedy development.

Why Paramount Didn’t Want ‘The Little Prince,’ and Netflix Thinks It Can Win An Oscar

12 July 2016 12:04 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Originally set for Paramount release March 18, Netflix will stream the animated movie August 5—and, Netflix tells Indiewire, they will open the movie day and date in theaters in advance of a full-scale Oscar campaign.

Adapted by top American animator Mark Osborne (“Kung Fu Panda”) from the 1943 French children’s classic by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (which has been translated into 260 languages and is still a staple on children’s bookshelves), “The Little Prince” premiered at Cannes 2015 to rave reviews.

Since then Osborne has attended 12 international premieres and the $80-million movie has grossed more than $100 million around the world. Designed from the start as an English-language film that would be dubbed for foreign countries, “The Little Prince” succeeded overseas, doing best in China ($25 million), Italy ($10.5 million) and France ($12 million), where it won the Cesar for Best Animated Feature.

Even so, just after the film opened in Canada on March 11, Paramount abruptly pulled it from theaters, »

Top 10 Box Office Takeaways: Animation Rules as ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ Soars to Record Heights

10 July 2016 2:01 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The twisty summer of 2016 is taking some surprising turns. Unexpectedly, the most recent new animated film, Universal/Illumination’s “The Secret Life of Pets,” topped $100 million for the weekend. That makes it the biggest ever opening for an original animated feature. It’s not quite the level Pixar sequel “Finding Dory” reached three weeks ago (the year’s highest-grosser is one of Disney’s biggest cartoon features), but its achievement is incredible. This one movie could make the summer box office, with some promising films still to come, not fall off as steeply from 2015.

The other opener, comedy “Mike and Dave’s Wedding Date” (Twentieth Century Fox) did about a sixth as well, about where it was expected. There is always room for comedy in the market, especially when the public could use a diversion. But that need is better served at the moment by the significantly more successful “Central Intelligence »
