Ahead of its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, May 20, the French language trailer for Michael Haneke's latest Palme d'Or contender "Amour" has hit the web. Returning to La Croisette after winning the coveted award in 2009 for "The White Ribbon," "Amour" finds the auteur collaborating with Isabelle Huppert for the third time following "Time of the Wolf" and "The Piano Teacher," which won Huppert the Best Actress award at Cannes. Here's the plot per Sony Pictures Classics who acquired the film for North American distribution last month: In the film, Georges (Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) are in their eighties. They are cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter (Huppert), who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family.  One day, Anne has an attack. The couple's bond of love is severely tested. Watch the preview below:   »

Cannes Check: Michael Haneke's 'Amour'

1 May 2012 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

The director: Michael Haneke (German-Austrian, 70 years old) The talent: After the low-profile ensemble of "The White Ribbon," Haneke returns here to the big names. Isabelle Huppert has a history with Haneke and Cannes: she won the festival's Best Actress award (her second) for "The Piano Teacher" in 2001, and headed the jury that handed him the Palme d'Or three years ago. This marks her third collaboration with him, and her first since 2003's "The Time of the Wolf," but she doesn't appear to be the primary focus this time: that'd be two veterans of the French New Wave, Emmanuelle Riva »

Michael – review

3 March 2012 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The Josef Fritzl affair and similar cases of horrendous incarceration revealed in its wake have now produced a sizable body of documentaries, feature films and fiction too, of which Michael is a minor, rather puzzling addition. The 40-year-old Austrian film-maker Markus Schleinzer, whose first feature film this is, has worked as a casting director on over 60 films, among them Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher, Time of the Wolf and, most significantly, The White Ribbon, on which he coached the child actors.

The eponymous Michael (Michael Fuith) is a 35-year-old minor official with an Austrian insurance company, who keeps the 10-year-old Wolfgang (David Rauchenberger) a prisoner in the soundproofed basement of his suburban home. Michael is a bespectacled, nondescript loner with a brother and sister both married with children. He largely keeps to himself, rejecting the advances of a female colleague, whom he physically throws out of his house when she intrudes. »

5 Actresses That Are Overdue For An Oscar Nomination

21 February 2012 1:41 PM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Well, we've taken a look at the leading men, now it's time to look at the actresses who have also fallen outside of the Academy Award radar. While there is no Gary Oldman-esque story of recognition this year at the Oscars for the ladies, these five names will hopefully be a reminder that there are more women out there other than Meryl Streep who deserve to put that funny gold statue on their mantle. The names here include international stars, undersung character actresses and bonafide legends. Their time will hopefully soon come, but until then, here's what they've done so far that deserves attention. Isabelle Huppert Nomination-Worthy Roles: Pomme in "The Lacemaker"; Violette Noziere in "Violette Noziere"; Marie in "A Story Of Women"; Jeanne in "La Ceremonie"; Marie-Claire Muller in "Merci pour le chocolat"; Erika Kohut in "The Piano Teacher"; Anne Laurent in "The Time Of The Wolf"; »
