The first and the best

10/10
Author: Dann Lennard from Sydney, Australia
9 February 2004

Starrcade '83 was the original grandaddy of pro-wrestling "supercards" and the inspiration for the annual WWF/WWE Wrestlemania extravaganzas that began two years later.

The NWA - a loose federation of smaller promotions (or territories) - was, at that time, the biggest organisation in wrestling and the NWA world title was the most prestigious title in the sport. Harley Race was The Man and his challenger on this Thanksgiving night was a young, cocky upstart called Ric Flair. Their months-long feud came to an end in a steel cage on this unforgettable evening.

Get your hands on the video if you can 'cos the rest of the card was just as entertaining, especially the dog collar match pitting an in-his-prime Roddy Piper (as a babyface good guy) versus Greg Valentine.

The Assassins (#1 and #2) Vs. Rufus R. Jones/Bugsy McGraw - 3/10 (circus team was ridiculous with all the taunts)

Johnny Weaver/Scott McGhee Vs. Kevin Sullivan/Mark Lewin 4/10

Carlos Colon Vs. Abdullah the Butcher - 5/10 Wahoo McDaniel/Mark Youngblood Vs. Dick Slater and Bob Orton, Jr. 4/10

Title vs. Mask match: Charlie Brown Vs. The Great Kabuki 4/10

Dog Collar match: Roddy Piper Vs. Greg Valentine 3,5/10 3-move package Piper at his best. Sigh. Punch, kick, choke, punch, kick, eye-poke

NWA World Tag Team Championship: Jay Youngblood and Ricky Steamboat Vs. Jack and Jerry Brisco 7/10 It's pleasure after all that stuff to watch Steamboat wrestle.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship: Steel cage match: Ric Flair Vs. Harley Race 8/10

Professional wrestling history was made on April 24th 1983.

More than 30,000 fans jammed into two sold-out arenas to witness the first ever

mega-event promoted by the American Wrestling Association.

The Civic Center in St. Paul, Minnesota played host to 20,000 fans while an additional 10,000

fans were watching via closed circuit television next door in the St. Paul Auditorium.

The event sold out in three days. Promotors called it Super Sunday.

Ad in Media presents the classic wrestling documentary called

"Super Sunday: Running Wild"

This two hour Pay-Per-View special was hosted by the legendary wrestling announcer,
