The first true "supercard" in pro wrestling history, this show, held on Thanksgiving Night 1983 in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA, featured Harley Race defending the NWA World heavyweight championship against "Nature Boy" Ric Flair inside a steel cage (with former champ "Big Thunder" Gene Kiniski as special guest referee). Also that night, Jack & Jerry Brisco defended the 'NWA' World tag team championship (JCP version) against former titleholders Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood, then-U.S. champ Greg Valentine met Rowdy Roddy Piper in a non-title dog collar match, Charlie Brown From Outta Town (Jimmy Valiant in a mask) challenged The Great Kabuki for the 'NWA' television championship, Dick Slater & Cowboy Bob Orton met Wahoo McDaniel & Mark Youngblood (replacing Hulk Hogan), Carlos Colon collided with Abdullah the Butcher, Kevin Sullivan & Mark Lewin faced Johnny Weaver & Scott McGhee, and The Assassins tangled with Bugsy McGraw & Rufus R. "Freight Train" Jones. Written by
Ricky Steamboat and Jay Youngblood defeated the Brisco Brothers (Jack and Jerry) for their fifth and final NWA World Tag Team Title reign together. They never lost the titles, as they were declared vacant when Steamboat announced his "retirement" on December 25th. See more »
Starrcade '83 was the original grandaddy of pro-wrestling "supercards" and the inspiration for the annual WWF/WWE Wrestlemania extravaganzas that began two years later.
The NWA - a loose federation of smaller promotions (or territories) - was, at that time, the biggest organisation in wrestling and the NWA world title was the most prestigious title in the sport. Harley Race was The Man and his challenger on this Thanksgiving night was a young, cocky upstart called Ric Flair. Their months-long feud came to an end in a steel cage on this unforgettable evening.
Get your hands on the video if you can 'cos the rest of the card was just as entertaining, especially the dog collar match pitting an in-his-prime Roddy Piper (as a babyface good guy) versus Greg Valentine.
