This movie follows the life of a pathetic man drafted into the Japanese navy. He eventually gets assigned to the Kaiten (Human Torpedo) kamikaze/suicide attacker squad. The human torpedo is basically a normal torpedo, with a barrel lashed to the side that is big enough for a man to squat inside. The man waits in open ocean for an enemy boat to come by and then pulls a trigger on the torpedo to launch it. After that, he's left adrift in the water. I saw the movie about 15 years ago, so I don't remember many details, just these that stuck in my head. There is clearly a literary parallel between the man's aimless life and the aimlessness of floating around the ocean waiting for a chance to shoot a torpedo.
I'd love to see this movie again. I don't remember if it was particularly good, but the imagery has stuck with me.
I believe the English translation of the title is "Human Torpedo".
