Did You Know?

Desmond Llewelyn was not the first choice for the role of Q. Peter Burton preceded Llewelyn as Q but for only one film, Dr. No (1962). In that movie, he was known as Major Boothroyd and Armourer. Llewelyn was only referred to as Major Boothroyd once in the James Bond movies, and that was by Roger Moore in the The Spy Who Loved Me (1977). See more »

Rest in peace, Desmond

"Inside Q's laboratory" is a pleasant little tribute to late Desmond Llewelyn (1914-1999) who played Major Boothroyd, ingenious but hot-tempered gadget master of MI6 in nearly every James Bond movie since 1963. "Q" was only a small part but somehow he turned out to be one of the nicest, funniest and the most lovable, charming, sympathetic and charismatic characters of the whole series. Everybody waited his appearance, especially in the newest movies.

Llewelyn died tragically in a car accident shortly after the premiere of "The World is not enough". He was 85 years old. This documentary introduces some of his most famous gadgets like the briefcase that was used in "From Russia with love" and the world's deadliest automobile from "Goldfinger". We hear thoughts of directors like Lewis Gilbert and John Glen. Roger Moore tells about a practical joke he fooled Desmond Llewelyn with and Llewelyn himself gets a chance to talk too.

Biggest problem of "Inside Q's laboratory" is the fact that it only lasts 10 minutes. Llewelyn would have certainly deserved a special that's at least two or three times longer. Documentary is narrated by Marie Clairu and directed by John Cork. If you wonder where you can find it, it's at least available as a special feature in "On Her Majesty's secret service" DVD.
