I’m fascinated by the current state of NBC. Last among the four major networks. Kept from the very bottom by dynasty deals like the NFL and the Olympics. A shell of its former self still propping up Jay Leno for chuckles every night. But I don’t look at the wilted Peacock with schadenfreude, like many do. Instead, it’s with sadness and nostalgia. What happened?
As an ’80s kid, I grew up watching NBC’s Saturday morning block, “Saved by the Bell,” “Alf,” Cosby, and Will Smith before he was Will Smith. The national news in our house was delivered by Tom Brokaw. I watched Michael Jordan dominate the NBA on NBC. There’s an easy joke in here about “Diff’rent Strokes” and “Baywatch.” In high school and college, we’d gather around episodes of “Friends,” “Scrubs,” “The West Wing,” and other “must see TV.” Conan O »

We last posted about this film back in April of last year, when Cynthia reported that Keke Palmer would star in the upcoming Nickelodeon TV film Rags, produced by Nick Cannon, directed by Billy Woodruff (Honey) and scored by Rodney Jerkins. The film, in which Palmer plays a pop starlett, also stars Max Schneider and Drake Bell. Here's the full synopsis: “Rags, a music-infused modern-day fairy tale debuting this spring. The two-hour original TV movie centers on Charlie Prince (Max Schneider), an orphan living with his acerbic and unloving stepfather and spoiled stepbrothers, whose dream of being a singer might come true once he meets pop star Kadee Worth (KeKe Palmer). Rags is executive produced by Nick Cannon, directed by Billy Woodruff (Beauty Shop, Honey) and features original music by Rodney Jerkins and choreography by Rosero McCoy (America’s Best Dance Crew).” No word on the premiere date as of yet. »

Tuning in to the People’s Choice Awards requires an automatic suspension of shouting “Aw hell no!” After all, placing the power in the hands of “the people” — or rather, rewarding the movies and TV shows with the most mouth-foamingly rabid fan bases — can lead to awkward moments like Robert Pattinson walking to the podium to collect the trophy for Best Drama Movie (for the moderately received Water for Elephants) and wondering aloud, “I don’t know why they asked me to accept it.” (Um, because you’re hot, and you’re there, and the Twilight fans didn’t vote to see director Francis Lawrence. »

New York -- Mekhi Phifer is not used to being shouted at, but it's part of his Broadway debut.
The 37-year-old actor, best known for the TV series "ER" and the film "8 Mile," is discovering that audiences aren't silent while watching him in "Stick Fly," Lydia R. Diamond's complex drama about a black family.
"People are spirited when they see this play," he says, laughing.
Both white and black audience members in the Cort Theatre are known to burst out with spontaneous advice for the actors or to otherwise clearly telegraph their reaction to dramatic situations. "I had to get used to that," he says. "It's not very typical for Broadway – at least the Broadway plays that I've seen."
Phifer plays Flip LeVay, a successful plastic surgeon and ladies' man who attended Exeter and Harvard. Sparks fly when he and his younger brother bring their respective girlfriends – one black, one »
