Newswire: Here’s what’s coming to (and going from) Hulu in September

16 August 2017 5:07 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

August has been Friends Month at Hulu, with the streaming service getting a big collection of movies and TV shows that are all about people who have friends or whatever, so it’s appropriate that September will be Family Month—a month dedicated to movies and TV shows about people who either have families or don’t have families because their parents were gunned down in an alley. In September, Hulu subscribers will be able to catch such family-centric content as The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, season 13 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Batman, Batman Returns, Carrie, My Girl, Robocop, And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird, Silent Hill, Freaky Friday (1977), Freaky Friday (2003), and Lilo & Stitch—though that one’s technically about ‘ohana, which means family.

Subscribers will also be able to watch a bunch of classic Tgif sitcoms, most of which revolve around families »

Face/Off at 20: revisiting the film

Paul Martinovic Jul 28, 2017

John Travolta and Nicolas Cage scored a big hit in John Woo's Face/Off. We take a look back...

One of the great pleasures of following genre cinema is the long, enduring onscreen conversation that’s taken place between movie directors from the East and the West, a creative push and pull which has resulted in some of the most boundary-pushing, inventive and important films ever made. When Akira Kurosawa wrote The Hidden Fortress, an airy homage to the John Ford Westerns he loved so much, he can’t have predicted its rollicking adventuring would be re-interpreted and sent into space by George Lucas to form the basis of the most successful film franchise in history in Star Wars: A New Hope. Similarly, when Ringo Lam took the tropes of 70’s Eurocrime and American gangster movies of the 30s and 40s, and upped the machismo and »

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Drops Season 3 Trailer, Explains Those Dinosaurs

22 July 2017 5:28 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

After rolling a new Season 3 trailer out at the top of the Warner Bros. panel, “Legends of Tomorrow” executive producers Marc Guggenheim and Phil Klemmer took the Comic-Con stage with cast members Tala Ashe, Dominic Purcell, Nick Zano, Caity Lotz, Brandon Routh, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Victor Garber, and Franz Drameh.

Here’s what we learned: Guggenheim explained, “We won’t fix time immediately but we’ll see how dinosaurs in Los Angeles happened.” Klemmer added, “Last season, Legends were the only game in town. Now, Rip Hunter has constituted a new version of what Time Hunters are. Now, Legends are up against the best and brightest.”

About villains fans can expect in the new season, Klemmer teased, “We want to lean into that collection of villains from various DC shows, perhaps some non-human villains.” Guggenheim added, “We’re bringing Colassa from the CW Seed series onto the show and the inevitable confrontation between Maisie and her granddaughter.”

‘Crosswind #1′ Review

Written by Gail Simone | Art by Cat Staggs | Published by Image Comics

One of the best benefits of comics is that the format allows you to easily take a known concept or storyline and modify it to an unexpected genre. Gail Simone and Cat Staggs’s  Crosswind takes the idea of the good old body-swap we have seen in movies like Freaky Friday and adds a more mature tone. As a first issue, it works as mostly setup. Like a long form standup,  we have a long lead into the eventual punchline that happens in the final moments. Some of that lead in has its rough patches, but overall as a first issue, it works well enough to garner interest for what is to come next.

Unlike Freaky Friday this is not a story where a mother and daughter switch bodies. In fact, the two people in this story do »

Our Favourite Mother/Daughter Acting DuosOur Favourite Mother/Daughter Acting DuosZachary Dent5/12/2017 3:40:00 Pm

To celebrate Mother's Day we're taking a look at our 5 favourite mother/daughter acting duos who've made a name for themselves in Hollywood.

Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis

Not only are these two mother and daughter but they've had some of the most iconic female roles in horror movie history. Janet Leigh was a bonafide scream queen from the late 1950's up until the early 1980's. She starred in Touch of Evil, The Fog, and of course Psycho for which she received an Oscar nomination. Jamie Lee Curtis first gained mainstream attention with her portrayal of Laurie in John Carpenter's Halloween which sparked a multi-decade franchise. She has since solidified herself among Hollywood greats with Freaky Friday, True Lies, and A Fish Called Wanda.

Smurfs & Gramps Take One Last Swing At Box Office -- The Weekend Warrior

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

Three New Movies May Have Trouble Making Much of a Mark

After a couple impressive March weekends with one new box office record, and a couple impressive openings, we’re now into April, and of the new movies, there just doesn’t seem like anything can defeat last week’s powerful duo of DreamWorks Animation’s The Boss Baby--which exceeded all predictions with $49 million, taking the top spot from Beauty and the Beast. Ghost in the Shell didn’t even do as well as I thought it may, opening with just $19 million, those late reviews helping to kill its weekend.

Sony Pictures Animation are giving the loveable blue Smurfs a third go at American audiences with The Smurfs: The Lost Village (Sony), after two previous movies, »

Review: ‘Your Name’ is an Exhilarating Philosophical and Metaphysical Parable

5 April 2017 7:06 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

I had no idea what to expect upon sitting down to Your Name and the first few minutes definitely had my head spinning. We’re ushered in via the voiceover narration of two high schoolers we’ve yet to properly meet in Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi) and Taki (Ryûnosuke Kamiki). They speak about dreams as a rare comet shoots across the blue sky. It’s cryptic, beautiful, and utterly fascinating—a subdued tone easing us in before a kinetic collage of vignettes without context replaces it, a Radwimps rock anthem blaring about love. This shift to music video interlude proves jarringly abrupt; its culmination marked by Mitsuha awakening from slumber a wonderful splash into the deep-end of this anime’s high concept romantic fantasy.

My disorientation continued because this girl didn’t seem herself. Without warning, logic, or exposition beyond those opening lines of esoteric prose, we suddenly realize the person »

Movie Review: Freaky Friday meets Nicholas Sparks in the record-breaking anime Your Name

4 April 2017 10:00 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Already the fourth-highest-grossing film ever in its home country of Japan (trailing Spirited Away, Titanic, and Frozen), the anime romance Your Name boasts a fate-driven appeal that’ll be quite familiar to Americans who love Nicholas Sparks novels and their onscreen adaptations. Initially, the story appears to be a basic Freaky Friday-style body swap, albeit with a slight twist: The people involved don’t know each other at all. One day, Tokyo teenager Taki (voice of Ryûnosuke Kamiki) mysteriously awakens to find his consciousness inhabiting a girl of roughly the same age, Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi), who lives in a rural area some 200 miles away. He spends a confused day struggling to maintain this stranger’s routine, unaware that Mitsuha is making the same effort in his own body. The next day, everything’s back to normal, but the switch keeps happening, seemingly at random. Eventually, they start communicating »

Why Karen Gillan Is Wearing That Skimpy Costume in Jumanji 2

28 March 2017 2:33 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Every since the first cast photo for The Rock's new Jumanji movie arrived, controversy has swirled around Karen Gillan's skimpy costume in this so-called sequel to the Robin Williams' classic. Back when the image was first made public, Dwayne Johnson stated that there was a good reason for Gillan's character to be dressed like that. Now, that reason has been revealed.

Dwayne Johnson showed up to Sony Pictures' big panel at CinemaCon last night, to show off the very first footage from his Jumanji movie, which he assured early on isn't a reboot or remake, but instead a sequel to the 1995 original. Standing before a packed house, The Rock announced that his movie is titled Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. And that there is a big twist.

As revealed in the first look footage, this version of the story doesn't revolve around a board game. It is »

NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 18 Review: Getaway

19 March 2017 7:56 PM, PDT | TVfanatic | See recent TVfanatic news »

It was kind of a "Freaky Friday" situation this episode.

Nell and Eric were assigned to the couples retreat in the woods, while Deeks and Kensi provided support on NCIS: Los Angeles Season 8 Episode 18.

These choices by Hetty made perfect sense to me. It was a lot easier for Nell and Eric to embrace the outdoors than for Deeks and Kensi to become genius-level at technology.

The plot was more than a little convoluted. As I followed it, a mess of data was stolen from the Treasury Department, including a list of undercover IRS agents. And apparently, an Arab religious/terrorist group wanted that list bad enough to kidnap Tara's sister. Which is why she ran off teary every time her sister was mentioned.

Ok, that makes sense, kinda.

But really, this was just an excuse to get Nell and Eric alone together so that they could bring out their feelings about each other. »
