From Angelina Jolie to Daisy Ridley, Here’s the Top 14 Female Action Stars Working Today

4 April 2017 4:12 PM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.

Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and »

6 Things You Should Probably Know About Prison Break's Wentworth Miller

1 April 2017 1:20 PM, PDT | Popsugar.com | See recent Popsugar news »

Wentworth Miller is best known for his ridiculously good looks and his role as Michael Scofield in Fox's Prison Break, but there's so much more to him than that. Like, did you know that he has a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, or that he's starred in not one, but two Mariah Carey music videos? Read on to get to know more about the star in six quick facts. Wentworth is a dual citizen. He was born in England to American parents and moved to Brooklyn when he was just a year old. Each of his parents have at least three different ethnic backgrounds. "My father is black and my mother is white. Therefore, I could answer to either, which kind of makes me a racial Lone Ranger, at times, caught between two communities," he previously told GQ Germany. His dad has Jamaican, African-American, Jewish, and English ancestry, while his mom is Russian, »

Anthony Mackie Wants to Become Marvel's New Blade

20 March 2017 10:41 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Back in May 2013, Marvel re-acquired the rights to three beloved characters, Blade, Ghost Rider and The Punisher, and since then, two of those three characters have been re-introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, made his debut in Season 2 of the Marvel Netflix series Daredevil, with a new stand alone series in production as well. Ghost Rider debuted on Marvel's ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4, although the studio used the Robbie Reyes incarnation of this character, instead of the more well-known Johnny Blaze. There have been rumors that a Blade movie or TV series is happening, but while there has been no official confirmation, one actor has thrown his hat in the ring to play the Daywalker, Anthony Mackie. Here's what the actor had to say during an appearance over the weekend at the Wizard World convention in Cleveland.

Come Sunday, a.k.a. Oscars night, we'll all be tipping our hats to the year's winners. But before we do that, here's to the "losers" – the worthy ones of 2016 that, for whatever cockamamie reason, didn't even get a nomination.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter review – more dull and deafening antics

Milla Jovovich returns for yet another high-impact action thriller set in a zombified world dripping with yucky horror-violence

The violence keeps coming in this movie, but, if there’s one thing more devastatingly brutal than the law of the jungle, it’s the law of diminishing returns. The sixth film in the Resident Evil franchise might pick up some farewell-tour custom by calling itself The Final Chapter, but the ending naturally leaves things open for a seventh. Just as Kate Beckinsale climbed back into the skintight leathers for another Underworld outing, so Milla Jovovich is back in residence for yet another high-impact action thriller set in a gruesome zombified world, with Iain Glen reprising his turn as the creepy megalomaniac scientist. There’s a great deal of yucky horror-violence testing the limit of that 15 certificate. It often features Jovovich on a motorbike roaring sexily, endlessly, across a post-apocalyptic landscape where »

'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter': Film Review

27 January 2017 8:05 AM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Marking the announced end of the video game-inspired sci-fi/horror film franchise that has produced six films in 15 years (it’s amazing how time flies when you’re bored out of your mind), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter delivers fans more of the same. Again starring the formidable Milla Jovovich as Alice, the ass-kicking heroine desperately attempting to save society from being decimated by an evil corporation, this installment provides a fitting finale for the series, inasmuch as it’s as mediocre as all the ones preceding it.

As with the recent edition of the similar Underworld franchise, the film begins with a »

Box Office: Resident Evil to Take Bite Out of A Dog’s Purpose

27 January 2017 7:40 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

A version of this article originally appeared on ew.com.

Curiosity killed the cat, and controversy might kill A Dog’s Purpose — with a little help from Milla Jovovich, that is.

The action star’s latest genre venture, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, squares off this weekend against the family-oriented, Lasse Hallström-directed picture, which has endured the brunt of negative publicity following the publication of a video depicting the film’s production, during which a dog trainer seemingly forced a German shepherd to film a water-based scene against the animal’s will.

Why ‘Split’ May Take the Top Box Office Slot For The Second Week, And ‘A Dog’s Purpose’ Is Left Panting

26 January 2017 11:48 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This week, three new wide releases will take advantage of a projected lull in the schedule — “A Dog’s Purpose” (Universal), “Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” (Sony) and “Gold” (Weinstein). They compete against the second weekend for “Split” (Universal), along with possible Oscar-nomination surges for “Hidden Figures” (20th Century Fox) and “La La Land” (Lionsgate). Of course, that lull is there for a reason: This late January weekend, just before the Super Bowl, is usually among the very worst of the year.

The title to beat is “Split,” the M. Night Shyamalan hit produced by Jason Blum that became the first non-franchise, live-action release to open to over $40 million since the fall 2015. If it performs like most horror films, which tend to be frontloaded, it could fall only 50 percent for a $20 million total.

That might be enough to repeat at no. 1. It’s not unheard of for a genre title »

Underworld: Blood Wars review – dead on arrival

15 January 2017 12:00 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Yet another round of vampires v werewolves offers little new for even the franchise’s biggest fans to get their teeth into

Only diehard fans will have kept count of how many films there have been in the Underworld series – this is the fifth – and even they will be increasingly hard pressed to tell them apart. Underworld: Blood Wars shares the same sooty palette, the same slice-and-dice aerial action sequences and it proves, yet again, that nobody can kick ass in a breathable Pvc bodysuit quite like Kate Beckinsale.

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Review

Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Lara Pulver, Tobias Menzies, Charles Dance, James Faulkner, Peter Andersson, Clementine Nicholson, Bradley James, Daisy Head, Oliver Stark | Written by Cory Goodman | Directed by Anna Foerster

It’s been some five years since the last entry into the Underworld franchise – Underworld: Awakening, the third sequel to the 2003 original – no doubt because that film almost, Almost killed the series…. However as the saying goes, time heals and in the case of these movies that seems to be true. Not only has it been long enough for audiences to forget the risible fourth film, but the break in production also seems to have revitalised the filmmakers too – and this time round we have a film that truly lives up to the “vampires vs. werewolves” premise proffered so many years ago.

Whilst the politics and power-struggle machinations of Underworld: Blood Wars make this story feel overly complex, hence »
